If you wouldn't mind telling, where were you? What river or town or whatever? I want to be sure to NEVER go there for anything. Did you show the cop how much junk you'd "fished" out of the river? That alone should have gotten you an attaboy rather than an outahere. Geez, I am so POed that this happened to you. What next? Can't stand on a sidewalk...must WALK on a sidewalk

that looks like an m-16 blank. Those things would always jam up!!!! Cool finds though. Sucks about the whole river thing.. I have never heard of a rule like that before

Ya, all it takes is for some "concerned citizen" to call the cops and the THer will often be hassled or asked to leave.
But the bottom line is this, if that river isn't closed to metal detecting and you're actually making the river safer by removing knives, etc., you can hunt it as much as you want. If that cop ever ticketed you he'd sure look silly when you showed the judge all the dangerous junk you removed.
I think he was just trying to get some complainers off his back so the easiest way was to tell you to leave. He probably had no real right to do that and was hoping you'd buy it.

He probably has a metal detector and thought that looked like a good place to go later on. You're not supposed to be able to metal detect on the Federal part of Assateague Island in Maryland, but I ocassionally see the park rangers doing it where they are not supposed to.

For TreasureTales: Reference sidewalk... That's been covered, too. You can WALK on 'em, but standing can get you a ticket. It's called LOITERING.

Just tie a line and a bobber to your machine...that way it looks like your fishing...and if you drop the machine...the bobber will tell you where it is

Tell them the "funny looking" fishing rod has a built in depth finder!
If they pull it out to look at it...act mad and say "dang fish! Thats the third time they took the entire hook!"

I'm afraid he would have had to tell me what ordinance he was enforcing. Way too many of these guys get away with their king-of-the-hill attitudes. Many think their guns and badges make them impervious to question or retaliation. I know of one that made a bad move on someone very close to me. While his nightstick was being pulled out he was slammed to the road. Then their was a choice of either running over him or taking off his car door. He went back to the station doorless. I'd like to think that he changed his tactics. When you confront many off these Bozos, they change their tune. They realize you aren't impressed with their uniform.

Hummmm, Jim take a throw line, put a bobber on it and tie it to ur waist. Now your fishing.
Next wear a life vest, now you cant drown in case you fall down in that 2 foot water.
Better yet, take a small tub sifter inside a tube for sifting the gravel, now you got a life preserver in case you sink.
I use to show a 55 chevy 2 door rod I owned when I lived in Missouri. I was at a car show one nice summer day and had a "Barney Fife" tell me my mufflers were too loud. Mufflers too loud at a hotrod car show?
No disrespect meant to the fine officers who put their life on the line for us everyday. Ever so often you simply run into a Barney Fife is all.

Yeah, that's true sometimes. I think some cops just have a suspicion and distrust of everybody. I met a retired Fish & Game warden at a writer's conference once. He was a nice guy until I said something about catching my limit of trout. Then he gave me the third degree...and we were at a conference (indoors and away from a stream) for crying out loud. For the most part I respect law enforcement people. They're only human and can be egotistical or controlling or wrong just like the rest of us. But to hassle a guy about standing in a river...that's just stupid. I guess fishermen never drown according to that cop. Well, I don't know the stats for that river, but I do know that fishermen drown every year. Standing, MDing, fishing or ... hey, maybe the cop thought diamondjim was taking a leak in the river!!! 
Oops, hope I can use that phrase without offending anyone.
