That is funny about the cops.

What is even funnier is I just bought my 3 year old daughter one of those last night to take camping with us this weekend (barbie fishing pole).

thats awesome i bought one of the poles because the rods collapse in and it goes from 8 to 20 inches and is perfect for the little creek by my house, stick a pole in the shore and catfish while you metal detect. what i dont get is why he is warning you about wading with a detector when its just as dangerous with a rod and reel?

Bummer, but at least you were pretty much done w/ the area.

We got stopped at a lake one night while metal detecting. The policeman was pretty cool about it. I showed him the assortment of awful, sharp things that came up out of that lake, he was actually pretty amazed that stuff would be in a swimming area. He told us, "look, I don't personally care if you detect here, but if one of the people complains, I will have to come back and ask you to leave". We said, Ok, no problem. It turns out nobody called that night, so we stayed for about another hour.

Like you said, fancy people who call the cops- some people just resent the idea that you are out there possibly finding something valuable, while they're not. Or else they just don't understand it and figure you must be a weirdo.

Those fancy people should read what it says on the Fugio cent.

Don't know about where you are but here in NY the state purchases "fishing rights" along streams. you can fish at these "state fishing accesses" but that is all. the property is still private property and fishing is the only activity that is allowed. Ran into this problem while looking for a geocache at a fishing access. We got run out by the owner.

Boy, what next! I think I would go to that sub station or who ever controls that part of the river. In other words try to get to his superior and tell them about it and ask what ordinance you have broken. Tell them you want to read them to be sure you don't give them any more problems and I bet the guy will not be able to tell you. What rotten luck. $:-\$

I got a better idea...
Take a sifter (approx 3X3) and a rake. Hold the sifter at an angle in the water and rake stuff onto it. Pull it up out of the water and pick through it. Have one bucket for the treasure and one bucket for dobson and minnows. Then you are catching bait, not treasure hunting. You just happen to be keeping all the metal to clean up the river.

They are in charge of upholding the law of clean tootsies in the water. For Crying out loud!!! Sheesh!!!!
