Been a slow weekend. On my 4th bag of cents, nothing to report. One 1912 wheat, but nothing else of note... until this beauty:

2nd steel penny I've found in the wild now, never expected to find one. Really happy it's a D, as first was from Philly. Almost makes up for the 300,000 cent Indian dry spell. And, I realize silver is king here, but definitely prefer steel, myself. Happy hunting everyone!

Damn. That’s a nice one. Great color and detail and no rust. The pair I have pulled had rust.

Didn't even know they made a steel penny. Interesting.

Wartime demand for copper led to a one year (1943) use of steel and zinc.

There are some 1943 coppers and 1944 steels, very rare, very valuable, and a lot of fakes!

Your odds of finding a silver coin is higher and better than a '43-steelie since most coin counting machines have a magnet to extract any foreign matter like screws, nuts, washers, etc., which automatically extracts a steel cent. This one must have fallen through a lot of cracks. Nice find.

I find about 5 steelies a year, all from the magnet or reject tray.
