Well, me and daddy got back out to that camp again today, and with all of the relics we found yesterday, we were geared up as soon as we got out of the truck. We scouted around the property until about lunch with not much luck. We finally decided to go back to the area where we had pulled most of our finds from yesterday and soon got back in to some more relics.

Here are my finds for today.

Looks like the both of you did quite well. I see some very nice finds Congradulations.....

That is not a kepi buckle...but that is indeed a sword belt keeper.

Nice finds!

The first "gun part" looks like the "trapdoor" to a trapdoor rifle. Behind the holes the piece on the bottom would be where the firing pin is. But I aint sure...d2

That is what we were thinking it was. Still not sure. Gonna do a little more research on it though.... :icon_study:

Very nice finds

Hey,  I was looking for one of your pieces you found today...

I wonder if it is a rear sight from a rifle.

Scroll down on the link below to the scanned diagram and photos of the Buffington rear sight:

http://www.trapdoorcollector.com/shooterstext.html

Is yours marked in yardage?  I can see some sort of marking at one end of it?  Is that a serial number?  Can you tell us what it says?

The other piece you found will take more work. It is interesting that in addition to the serial numbers stamped in, the piece has three sets of Roman numerals scratched in ("III," "V," and "VI").

Regards,

Buckles

Both the hinged piece, and the other piece have 592 stamped on them. I don't think that it is the flip up sight part of the gun, but I could be wrong.

I was thinking it was the flip up "trapdoor" itself. It has a hollow tube, like where the sparks from a percussion cap would have followed to get to the powder.

Its hard to explain....I could take some better pics of it later...that way, you could see what I'm talking about....Sorry if what I'm saying is confusing....lol
