Actually found this back in March and posted in Today's Finds but still not sure what it was used for.. Was located on some old Maryland farmland by a creek at about 8" down. The two pieces both have the "3 C" mark and a slot for coins with a possible hole used to lock the box or to hang it from something? I can't find any other writing or marks on it but the rust makes it pretty tough to see. Wish it would have been filled with extremely rare 3 cent coins but no such luck.. :unhappysmiley:

Stopped by a local coin shop and asked a few 'locals' but nobody really knew where it would have been used. Figured I would post here in case anyone has seen anything like it before. Thanks!

How about a machine that dispenses 3-cent stamps.

My grandfather use to have a saying when we would hop in the car and go someplace .. when we reached the destination, hey would say.. in his grand silliness .. "Well.. That's the end of the 3¢ fare" Back in his younger days, they had 3¢ hacks and trolleys. I just wonder if that could be an old 3¢ Fare box?

If the two pieces join to form a box, I would lean towards something that was more toward the 'honor system' (it just doesn't seem like there is room for a mechanism) - I like the trolley fare box idea (my first thought was a toll... a river was mentioned - lol).

If they are two distinct cover plates - then I could see it being vending-related.

My second thought was a collection box for votive candles... never saw one with a price on it though (not that I've seen more than 1 or 2 though!).

Yeah doesnt seem like there was anything else attached to it, I had thought maybe sat it out by a fruit stand or something since it was on old farm land.
