Went out this evening for a few hours at my favorite spot. The ground was moist from yesterdays rain so I decided to hit the area that I found the two colonial coppers earlier in the season. I changed my strategy a little this time and bumped up the discrimination just enough to tune out some of the iron bits and pieces I was digging before. It seemed to work because about an hour into the hunt I got this nice George II copper dated 1734! It was 6 or 7 inches down and was a real surprise when it popped out. Usually I will get a quarter reading on a copper coin like this but the signal was jumping around a little so I figured it wasn't a coin. In this case I'm happy to be wrong. The pictures really don't do it justice but this coin has great detail. I think it must have been lost when it was quite new. The other coins that came out of this area (within 50FT) were 1723 and 1695ish (no date visible). I wonder if there's still more there?

Beautiful coin, what did you use to clean it up??

The only thing I did to clean it was to soak it in warm soapy water for about 10 minutes then carefully rinse it under running water while giving it a light cleaning with a toothbrush. I applied a coating of olive oil to take the photos. It really is much better than the photos show. I'm going to try and get some better photos of it later today. The problem is that I have an ancient 1.7 megapixel camera.

And to answer the question about the field....It's big, probably 20 acres or more although the old colonial period stuff seems to be limited to a patch next to the road. Once you venture further into the field the colonial period stuff disappears. I did however find another area further up the road where I was finding old bits of iron and a colonial period button so I may come up with a coin or two in the area if I spend some more time there.

Good day to you, Bucklebouy!

I want us to get along, buddy. In the past, I would have started a forum brouhaha, but now, I am a "Yes, sir" kind-of-dude.

Peace, my friend. I need some peanut butter cups...I can eat many of these things, too, without gaining a pound. I love my ectomorphic body.

Then, we all are singing this song to our datectas:

All datectas strike again.

I can count on 1 hand how many I have had in that condition, and they are relatively common here. But that would be like me finding a Silver Roman Denarius - GREAT FIND - WELL DONE :)

Coming from you that's a real compliment because I am constantly in awe of your great finds! I can't wait to get back out there and find whatever else is still hiding under the grass. Maybe the next one will be silver!

You ectomorph! I don't think that's on the Tnet word list LOL ;) Now what would the phrenologists say about you peanut butter cup predilection? I'll send ya some in the mail. The KING SIZED kind :D
