This is not a dug coin. This morning a buddy and I went to a barn sale. The guy buys storage units and sells the contents. It was on an old property and we got permission to detect it! :icon_thumleft: We started talking about metal detecting and he said he had a bag of foreign coins he's been collecting from storage units over the years. He brought them out and dumped them on the table. I paid $30.00 for the bag of coins and 5 knives. I get the coins home and there are over 250 foreign coins, 2 silver 1968 canadian dimes, about 100 crap amusement tokens, a few casino chips and... A 1723 8 REALE??? Is this real and how much might it be worth?

EDIT- Its 28 MM. Maybe a 4 reale?

I removed/edited my last post. I was able to enlarge your photos, but there are still details that aren't clear. From the pictures provided, it is a 2 reales (might be 4 as I can't discern if it there are 2 roman numerals (I's) to the right of the shield or an (IV)). It was minted in Seville, and it is legitimate.

Thanks for the reply Diver. Now that I did some looking around on the web, I'm thinking its a 2 reale. Here are some close ups. Let me know if you want them zoomed in some more.

They used a rolling press for some Spanish continental coins and the flan gets elongated like that when it goes through the dies. It looks like an early regualr vellon 2 reals.

Very nice find that cob must be worth 150 to 250 at least.:icon_thumleft:
