Metal Detecting
I was reminded again today that a lot of research pays off. That research led me to what I thought may be an untouched cellar hole in the middle of a forest. Shortly after finding the site, I discovered a nice New Jersey copper dated 1787,
Two Draped Busts with one dated 1802
Some nice buttons including an oval one which you don't see as much
And a crooked spoon and fork.

That's when I noticed a few pieces of metal laying on top if some rocks...Drats, someone beat me to it...But they were not thorough by any means...

Obviously the find of the day is the fork and spoon. It's not every time out detecting that you come across both. One of these days I am bound to find the coveted utensil trifecta!

Wow! Great coins! And never be discouraged by the fact that someone else has been there!

Greats finds GKman. Whoever was there before you certainly wasn't very thorough. Those woods sites require quite a bit of patience to hunt. The Jersey copper is nice. I'm sure Don in SJ will be able to attribute the variety for you.

Nice NJ copper. One of my favorite coins.

thanks folks. isn't Don the one that's keeping track of all these New Jersey coppers that are found??

Yes. I believe he does a distribution study about the states and counties these coins are found in.

Nice to see more old coppers being found. You NJ copper is a 1787 Maris 63-s, the 8th one of that variety in my survey, out of over 660 reported found, by far not one of the most common varieties being reported found, despite what the total rating showing they are a Rarity 2 basically a common variety. Could you please PM me the county/state found in for my survey. Thanks

I love hearing great stories that demonstrate how good research pays off. Congrats on a stellar assortment of finds. Do have plans to revisit the site? The detectorist before you was clearly no pro--based on the targets he left behind.

Very nice finds. The coppers are just awesome. Great job!

Congrats on the Maris 63-s jersey copper. I found my only NJ copper in April 2008 and it was also a Maris 63-s. At the time Don said it was the 6th 63-s in his survey... so only 2 of that variety have been found and reported for Don's survey in the last 6 years.

Great site and killer state copper GK! You certainly were more thorough then the person before you. That always feels good

Nice find...When I hear or see that people dug the site before me I like it because the cleared the stuff on top for me..Now I can find the older coins and relics. ..lol
Great save!!!

Awesome finds.

(these are the kinds of finds that make me just a little jealous) :laughing7:

the clean up crew does just that, cleans up and you did a fair job of that, but is there more? congrats

Good research always pays off and I've still never found a hunted out site. Congrats on some nice coppers. There's some more there waiting for you.

Nice digs . Thanks for the pics

I am jealous of you guys back East. You have the chance of finding coins and relics that have not seen the light of day since the Revolutionary war and Civil war. I am still trying to find my first pre-64 silver coin. I guess it is all relative. There are guys in the UK that would call those newer finds. Good job!

very interesting study! Is there a separate thread for it? I'm from far north New Jersey... Sussex/morris county to be exact :)
