I've been losing a lot of weight in the past year. Down 60lbs and hit a goal I’ve been working on for a year this weekend…so I busted out some old pairs of shorts I’ve had in the bottom drawer of my dresser since my better days when I lived in Wisconsin in college. One of the buttons fell out of the shorts, and then I remembered why I put them away (yeah, my fat arse popped the button) Grandma raised 7 boys, and I’ll be damned if one of her grandsons is too proud/stupid to not sew. I went into my bottom drawer for my threads and needles to put this button back on so I can wash and wear these things. Next to my threads is an old box with a CGA video card I bought back in the day when eBay was new (bought it as an antique, as I’m an IT nerd). I pulled it out to take a look at it, since it has been years since I last drooled up on it, and lo: out flops a few of my better old baseball cards, and 3 Whitman Blue Books of coins. I remembered putting those in the box when I moved out of my childhood home when I was 18 and my parents were divorcing. It was a quick move, so things got thrown into whatever box was handy. I knew when got my first car I sold some of my better coins to my mom, and I thought she absconded with the rest after she got caught cheating on my dad and raided the valuables in the house. I’d apologize to her for thinking ill of her for years, but she’s still a crook for other things she’s done, still haven’t talked to her since then.
Regardless of the faults of my mother, there they were: 2 books of Lincoln Pennies, and a book of 1938 to 1961 Jefferson Nickels. I was excited because I knew I had some silver war nickels when I was a kid…and I just found them! I already have a complete set of all the silver nickels, but 3 was a nice addition to the pile. I also got to add my new found nickels to my old book from ~20 years ago.
I grabbed the other old Jefferson nickels I saved from the first bag of nickels I CRHed from my credit union’s coin counter this past weekend, and filled in a lot of holes. I even found I had one of the most rare Jefferson Nickels there is in that book, the 1938-S! When I was a kid, I had no idea what a Key Date was, just that I had one of the oldest nickels in the book!
With 3 silvers on the pile for “free” I took my baseball cards to the various collector shops in my city. The first was a shop that dealt in cards, comics, comics, and currency. When I got there I was told he doesn’t deal in sports cards (and rightfully so, he had NASCAR cards, which affirms my belief that NASCAR isn’t a sport!)…I took a look around at the prices he was asking for some of his stuff…and I got a little miffed. He was claiming most of his coins were AU when they weren’t…and regardless of the grade he put on them, wanted too much for them. He did have a lot of cool coins, but he also was asking quite a bit for worn Washington Silver Quarters…2x the silver price. Prices like that make me want to start my own coin shop if I can get away with those prices…but then again, his shop was pretty empty of people. I’ll stick to buying my coins on eBay from reputable buyers that have them in PCGS or NGC slabs or APMEX.
The other 2 shops wanted nothing to do with my cards, including a Lou Brock signature. I’m going to find some lucky Cardinals fan at work tomorrow to give this thing to, maybe their kids will appreciate it…
None-the-less, I’m happy I found my childhood collection. They aren’t much, but the thought of having those 3 silvers and that 1938-S for years without having a clue was a nice surprise. The 60lbs lost is awesome too
Some friends of mine and me finished off a bottle of 10 year island Scotch this weekend…was a good weekend all-in-all.
