Long story....Today I went to a creek to look around and do some metal detecting but I did not leave home until noon so it was nice and hot. I had to cook lunch for my husband. I had been at the creek for a little over an hour when I seen a pick-up drive by and then about 10 minutes later it drove back by. I only saw one other vehicle because this place is not hardly traveled. I did not notice that the people had stopped until this man walked by me and went under the bridge. I had my headphones on and was digging away so I did not hear him. He went under one side of the bridge and I did not think much about it and went about my business, that was when I glanced up he had went to the other side of the bridge and was looking into a hole between two rocks so I put my head down and tried to ignore the guy. Then the man came by me, stopped and asked me what I was looking for and I told him I was just seeing what I could find today but all I have found was gun shells and rusty nails. He asked me if that is what I was looking for, I told him no just looking for whatever. He made some small talk about metal detectors and how some could probably find gold. Then he told me about a place about a mile or so up the road and that there was something in the ground that was made of rock and that he could show it to me. He said he thought it was haunted and I told him I did not want to see anything that was haunted. We talked of other things also but it would just drag the story out longer if I went into every thing. The man looked dirty and his teeth where rotting out. Up the hill by my pick-up was his friend in their pick-up. Then the man started talking about some small fish in the water and he was looking under the rock for a catfish. The water hole under the bridge was not very big at all and was not deep either. I thought he might be talking about noodling and told him I had seen a show on TV about noodling, we talked noodling for a little bit he asked if I had ever been. He said he was just curious about what I was doing. Needless to say I thought to myself that I may not be leaving there. I just talked to him like I would anyone else and stayed calm on the outside but on the inside I was getting scared. So you see I was blessed today, everything turned out okay except that I did not find any treasure but the penny. So the total today is nothing of any value except me...the rest is gun shells, rusty nails and some rocks I picked up just because I like rocks plus my lucky penny, all pictured below. By the way 3 hours in the sun and in this heat not a good idea. Sorry this is long but just wanted to say, let someone know where you are going and if you are female be careful of where you go. Hope you had a nice day and a great hunt if you went today. HH

Glad to hear everything went ok. You never really know what someones really thinking. I was always taught to never trust anyone. I always tell my wife to make sure she has something to defend herself with. If you detect alone a lot I would look into getting a small can of OC spray if your state laws allow it. Good luck on your next hunt and take your lucky penny.

My husband said to take my pistol. I would probably get that took away. So I will bring my lucky penny to go with pistol :)

Just remember, a good hard jab with your digger right in the gut will pretty much stop most people, and should at least give you time to get away from them. the guy was probably just a harmless weirdo, but it pays to be on your guard.

I always turn up the volume and wear the headphones around my neck. this way I can hear what is going on around me. even underwater I can hear a boats propeller before I can even see the boat. I'm glad you're ok, there are some pretty evil people in the world.

digger and lucky penny... :)

People scare the heck oughta me! Especialy teenagers! Not that Im scared of getting hurt more like scared that one day I may have to hurt someone else. The two legged predators are by far the most dangerous! Very glad things turned out ok for you. If open carry is legal in your state do it 9 times out of 10 just the sight of a gun on ur hip is enuf to change a predators mind, but on that 10th one make dang sure u r ready to use it!

I think all of the stuff you found today was worth much more than anyone realizes. Wow, being a husband also i would have flipped out and went looking for trouble. They should never sneak up on anyone metal detecting, with headphones on, and carrying a shovel women or man. It sounds like they need a dose of some (ACT RIGHT)! I am very glad that you are ok. I agree take your lucky penny! Good hunting and next time kick him in the junk as soon as he gets even remotely close.

Glad you are ok and it was a good idea to share the story. Everyone needs to be aware when they are in isolated places. It's easy to get caught up in the moment of hunting. I feel comfortable with my digger, but I'm going to get some pepper spray too.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. what a country.

I'm glad everything turned out for the best except the finding treasure part.

I hunt alone about 95% of the time. I'm usually in urban parks and I've had some situations that gave me bad vibes. On time hunting in a remote part of a park with a bad reputation I saw two shady looking guys walk between me and my truck then stop to watch me. Just had a bad feeling so I worked my way towards a tree line that I knew had a rather busy road on the other side. At the edge I stopped and took out my cell phone to call the wife. I looked straight back at the guys and described them then just waited to see what they would do. After sometime they moved on. I'm usually hunting these areas in a shirt and tie so the locals think I'm a detective. Most of the time they stay as far away as possible but every once in a while I will get the crack pot come up to me but they are usually harmless. Did I mention that my wife thinks I'm the crack pot.

Be safe out there.

Wow, a shirt & a tie?! They should call you the 'gentleman detectorist' :laughing7: In the name of one-upping you, next time out I'm gonna wear a tuxedo...a white one with a red bow tie :tongue3: :laughing9:

with the rotted out teeth remote area --might be meth cookers * or pot feild growers

once they figgered out you were no threat to their operation the old buzzard most likely just left , however if they veiwed you as a "threat" to their op -- things might have got real ugly , real fast * -- I have a razor sharp digger and if my lifes on the line -- I WILL GUT EM LIKE A FISH .

I always have my .45 with me, there's just way too many rattlesnakes around here, but if anybody wanted to mess with me it would probably boost my intimidation factor, haha, and if I ran out of bullets I was a mile runner in college, so hopefully no one can catch me.

Same here on the razor sharp digger, I'm pretty sure I could spear a boar with mine!

Sounds like a good possibility, being vigilant of your surroundings is very important anywhere you are!! A small two shot 22 pocketbook hand gun will help!!! Wait until they grab you and press the gun against the body and shoot! That way you won't miss!!! I worry about my wife jogging...... let alone Mding in a remote area! Glad your safe!

:o :laughing9: toothless meth cookers ::) LOL

Sounds spooky to me but you handled yourself well and glad it turned out ok. My family is from the Choctaw Nation in Little Dixie and there has always been some characters down there, but it usually turns out I'm related to most of them. Carry your lucky penny, let somebody know where you're goin, and keep the same mindset you got. Go ahead and carry a gun if you want. But remember, pull it and shoot. Don't pull it and give no speeches. And if you get in a wrasslin match, there will be a gun involved. Yours.

Underarock, not sure what to make of your reply to my comment. But if you dont think this is a dangerous world we live in then you really have been under a rock! Your reply seemed to make it seem as if my country was bad? Well at least in parts of it we are allowed the freedom to own and carry a handgun for self defence. Personaly I think every law abiding citizen should carry a handgun. It would probably stop or at least cut short alot of the rampage shootings, and if the other customers in a 7-11 have guns maybe the idiot would think twice about pulling a gun and robbing it. As a victim of a violent crime I thank God to be living in my country where we are allowed to defend our life liberty and pursuit of happieness!

Thanks to everyone who took time to read my story. I came to understand that it is important to know your surroundings, having been raised here I didn't think about anyone making me feel afraid but times have changed. When someone is on that meth you never know what they are capable of or when they might just flip out. Let someone know where you are not only because of the safety issue but you never know when you might get hurt, snake bit etc. I got too hot yesterday and if my husband thought I was gone to long he could check on me. HH everyone.
