Long story....Today I went to a creek to look around and do some metal detecting but I did not leave home until noon so it was nice and hot. I had to cook lunch for my husband. I had been at the creek for a little over an hour when I seen a pick-up drive by and then about 10 minutes later it drove back by. I only saw one other vehicle because this place is not hardly traveled. I did not notice that the people had stopped until this man walked by me and went under the bridge. I had my headphones on and was digging away so I did not hear him. He went under one side of the bridge and I did not think much about it and went about my business, that was when I glanced up he had went to the other side of the bridge and was looking into a hole between two rocks so I put my head down and tried to ignore the guy. Then the man came by me, stopped and asked me what I was looking for and I told him I was just seeing what I could find today but all I have found was gun shells and rusty nails. He asked me if that is what I was looking for, I told him no just looking for whatever. He made some small talk about metal detectors and how some could probably find gold. Then he told me about a place about a mile or so up the road and that there was something in the ground that was made of rock and that he could show it to me. He said he thought it was haunted and I told him I did not want to see anything that was haunted. We talked of other things also but it would just drag the story out longer if I went into every thing. The man looked dirty and his teeth where rotting out. Up the hill by my pick-up was his friend in their pick-up. Then the man started talking about some small fish in the water and he was looking under the rock for a catfish. The water hole under the bridge was not very big at all and was not deep either. I thought he might be talking about noodling and told him I had seen a show on TV about noodling, we talked noodling for a little bit he asked if I had ever been. He said he was just curious about what I was doing. Needless to say I thought to myself that I may not be leaving there. I just talked to him like I would anyone else and stayed calm on the outside but on the inside I was getting scared. So you see I was blessed today, everything turned out okay except that I did not find any treasure but the penny. So the total today is nothing of any value except me...the rest is gun shells, rusty nails and some rocks I picked up just because I like rocks plus my lucky penny, all pictured below. By the way 3 hours in the sun and in this heat not a good idea. Sorry this is long but just wanted to say, let someone know where you are going and if you are female be careful of where you go. Hope you had a nice day and a great hunt if you went today. HH

I always turn up the volume and wear the headphones around my neck. this way I can hear what is going on around me. even underwater I can hear a boats propeller before I can even see the boat. I'm glad you're ok, there are some pretty evil people in the world.

I never thought to put the headphones around my neck. Great idea

I think all of the stuff you found today was worth much more than anyone realizes. Wow, being a husband also i would have flipped out and went looking for trouble. They should never sneak up on anyone metal detecting, with headphones on, and carrying a shovel women or man. It sounds like they need a dose of some (ACT RIGHT)! I am very glad that you are ok. I agree take your lucky penny! Good hunting and next time kick him in the junk as soon as he gets even remotely close.

You think my items were than penny. The shells or the rock. The rocks are kinda cool. I was walking along that dry creek bed and found my rocks. I thought were different and I like different.

I'm usually hunting these areas in a shirt and tie so the locals think I'm a detective.

Wow, a shirt & a tie?! They should call you the 'gentleman detectorist' :laughing7: In the name of one-upping you, next time out I'm gonna wear a tuxedo...a white one with a red bow tie :tongue3: :laughing9:

lol...since this is an addiction and I have small children it is hard to find time to detect. One hour long period of time that nobody else in my life has put dibs on yet is my lunch hour. So on nice days at work I head out to the local parks in dress slacks, button down shirt and tie. I just roll up my sleeves and change my shoes to sneakers...the old Mister Rogers routine. I also wear a glove on my digging hand...can't go into an afternoon meeting with dirt under your finger nails.

Glad you are ok, Theda. Do be careful when hunting with the headphones on. I can hear conversation while using mine, but, someone could still sneak up on me. I make a habit of constantly looking to know what is all around me, especially, when in a remote location and alone. Plus, my digging tool is a Hori Hori knife (kept quite sharp) and I always carry an "equalizer." Bottom line, I am suspicious of everyone until I know better.
And, ALWAYS let someone know where you are going to cover any eventuality.

It's always a good idea to bring someone along even if they just sit in the car and read. The problem is with the head phones you can't hear what's going on. If I was out in the middle of nowhere like that I'd be packing SOMETHING in case TSHTF!!!

One thing I carry along is a rock hammer. I use it with a little hand shovel but the rock hammer in one hand generally makes strangers give me a wider birth. I pull the shovel out when I'm ready to dig.

Wow.... stereotype much? You feel your blessed because a curious passer-by meant no harm? Geez...

Who are you and what concern of it is yours?

Carry a gun. I do. Your an American and you have the right to do so! So many people died to defend that right. Don't let yourself be an unnecessary victim. When dirt bags see you are armed they tend to move on. They like un-armed citizens.

How do you know they meant no harm? Maybe he/they had second thoughts! Bad things happen to good people all the time. Some have called me paranoid, i prefer to think of it as prepared!

glad things worked out for you, whats the date on your lucky penny :icon_thumleft:

in a remote area - 2 shabby dressed rotten toothed men -- come upon a single basically "unarmed" female * and you think she's a "stero typer" for being worried -- dude -- I was "blitz" attacked from behind with a motorcycle chain belt - hit in the head and badly wounded --if I had "went down" most likely it would have been the end of me -- the spot I was at fishing at along the mad river in ohio flooded when it rained that night --even if they had left me alive but passed out , i would have drowned.

thankfully with the aid of the good lord, I got free of the scum but later passed out at the nearby fire rescue station while knocking on the door for help --last thing I recall was some one saying "oh my god" as I blacked out from blood loss -- from the wound on my skull

3 days later , I woke up in the hospital with my head shaved and a pounding headache and tunnel vision that looked as if I was peering down two tubes

no she's not being paranoid * just careful -- careless can kill ya these days and I'm a heck of alot more careful now than I was then. ( it was 1979)--I was 18 -- I'm 50 now --a lot older and wiser. --shoot and shoot to kill , not to wound. -- my rhyme is thus --- two in the chest and one in the head , make sure that the perp is fully dead.

said he was looking catfish,no catfish, those guys could of ate rock, never trust in todays world..

this is exactly why they make handguns and as an American exercise your right!!! I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6!!!

I think we have all met alot of "strange folks" out there detect', at least I know I have. Sounds like you played your cards right.

Keep it Up! M.J.

My story had a happy ending and underarock I totally agree with your comment of what a country. But when I say What A Country it is with pride. It is the land of the free. HH

Kiros32, sterotype maybe to you. I worked in our Sheriff's office and booked in a lot of the meth heads. It takes a lot out of anyone who has used meth and you see a lot of similaries. HH

We live in a great country where we have freedom of speech. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it shows that you and me agree on the freedom of speech. My freedom disagrees with you. Subject is ended now. HH

I am glad everything turned out fine. What we do draws out the curiousity in many people. It's pretty easy to tell between the curious and the ones with other intentions. I have run accross my share of weirdos. It is also easy to forget about watching your back when you hit a good spot.

Take care and watch your back out there,

Steve

I think he was just checking one of his catfish holes and doing a little flirting. Some people think detectorists are weird, they see their kids near someone detecting and tell them to get away from them. Its smart to not trust anyone you dont know, but not everyone is bad.

This is why I'm glad my wife has no interest whatsoever in metal detecting. I would worry about her all the time if she went without me; especially around here where there are some really hard rednecks. I'm not too worried about myself as I stay alert and have a few skills. I do have a concealed carry permit and it is legal to open carry here so I do that sometimes too, but yeah, I feel for you guys that have wives or girlfriends that may detect without you in remote places. Be careful ladies. Don't want anyone getting hurt or worse here.
