I was detecting a scraped area where a new street is being built, not where Sand and I detected Sunday. They found a Celtic graveyard doing the construction around this area so I thought it would be a great place and no permission required and I’m in the Celtic zone. After about 20 minutes of detecting, a van drives up through the construction site to where I am so I walked over and said hello. Two men asked to see my permit, I said I don’t have one for this area and I don’t need one, one guy says “then you have to leave”. I said bullshit, who are you? He wouldn’t give me his name and continued with his riff raff and said I will have to pay a big fine and lose my detector. Again I said bullshit, you don’t know what you are talking about and he said he was going to call the police, I said hurry up, I’ll be here for another hour and he drove off like he was somebody. About 30 minutes later the police show up, in the mean time, I went back to my car and got out the regulations and my other permit anticipating their arrival. Well of course here in Germany, they vanted to see my papers so I gave them more than they could chew. After the formalities, I was showing them a few finds I had made, one officer asked me if I had anything I could hurt him with, I said uh, no and he pointed to my pin pointer so I showed them how it works. We were waiting for a clearance for me to continue detecting from their headquarters when one officer said I’ll tell you what, you continue detecting and we will come back if you are not allowed to detect, so I did one better, gave them my cell phone number and said just call me so you do not have to come back, they agreed and good deal. They left and I continued detecting, never got the phone call and it’s been over 3 hours. I stayed close to the main road so the Jerky boys could see me. Then a lady who was Nordic Walking through the construction zone came by and asked what I was looking for, I explained old relics and coins and showed her a ring I had just found. She said there was a Celtic grave yard at the bottom of the hill and said she saw the Archies doing the dig and saw the bones they pulled up, it was 200 meters from where I was and I honestly had no idea. So I worked my way down to that area and found a silver coin but, nothing even close to 2000 years old. I’ll be back there tomorrow for sure and get a few pics and hopefully a Celtic gold coin or fibula. The grave yard has been exhumed by the Archaeologists and will be paved sometime in the next year. Here’s the better finds from this evening minus a few buttons. A copper or bronze Rosary ring with a cross, I estimate it to the late 1700s to mid 1800s, a crusty silver coin probably early 1800s, can’t clean it now and a small buckle probably mid 1800s. Nice finds...glad the police were rational and understanding and not just doing what the archies asked of them!

GREAT story! Good to see a win for the detectorists! Good to see you got onto such a good spot BEFORE they developed it.
Hope you have (or had) even more luck next time your there!

Loved the story! The police must of had a great time explaining to the compaintant that you were in your rites to search. Had the conservation officers around here try to boot me off some crown land that I was working, Changed there attitude after reading my permits!

Hello congrats on the great finds and how the Polizei encounter worked out! Only been to Germany once and didn't bring a detector; had heard that you could go, but unless you were hunting "WW2" stuff you were supposed to turn in everything you find to the local museums, gratis.

I mean, why be a cop if your scared of your shadow. Seariously,
you were being friendly showing him your finds, and he's afraid of you

Boy ain't that the truth! I once encountered a police officer that really made me wonder. I was driving home from work at a steel plant in NE PA and found a police car stopped in the road - a cow had gotten out of a pasture and into the road, so I stopped and jumped out to help herd the cow back in where she belonged. The officer was literally terrified to get out of his car! I told him it isn't a bull, just a cow that thought the grass looked greener outside but he was taking no chances! My boss stopped a minute later and we herded the cow in, and patched the downed fence (only a small spot) but really, afraid of a cow? What will he do if he runs into a really dangerous person? Yeesh. Oh well maybe he was just afraid of big animals?

Thanks for the great comments all, they certainly make sharing my experiences here more interesting. HH, Mike

Glad that worked out for you Mike, and that Celtic graveyard should be a great place to detect. There's a Viking graveyard and settlement they excavated about 2 years ago here in Waterford, and I would love to get down there but they have it fenced off and I would never trespass in a fenced off site. I was talking to a cousin of my wifes who was on the dig there, and they found the grave of a high ranking Viking warrior burried in full battle armour with his sword. Apparantly, that's a very rare find. Good luck at that site.

Cheers,

DJ
