A Coin I'll Never Find Again Double Struck Conn Copper

Hello Everyone,
This morning found DeArmitt, Mach 1 and 2 and Myself out in the Colonial Field we were at last weekend. The main objective this morning was to find some arrowheads. The field was freshly plowed but no rain before we were there made the arrowhead hunting tough. Of course we do this while swinging our Metal Detectors. I got a scrapper and a flake as well as a beat Copper. I really figured it was just one of those copper disks we find from time to time. Mach 2 got a Musketball and DeArmitt got an arrowhead, he also found the one lower right earlier in the week.
We changed sites after a while and Mach 1 scored 2 Coppers. I got a really beat V nickel. Then the rain came and brought an early end to the day.
After we got home DeArmitt set to cleaning the coins. I was amazed that he was able to bring anything out on this Copper let alone as much detail as he did, Nice Job John :icon_thumleft: Seems to be a Double Struck Connecticut Copper, The back has no detail.
HH,
BB

That is a cool find! I have a double struck George III but unfortunately in no better condition.

Re: A Coin I'll Never Find Again Double Struck Conn Copper

better than the average copper :icon_thumright:

There's a slight possibility you could still ID it if a unique obverse die was used. It would certainly take some looking, especially without being able to see the date. The condition and detail lost do to the double striking obviously adds to the challenge. But regardless, that's one I would be happy with.

The back is really beat as you can see. You don't get much good out of this field, too many years of heavy fertilizer

But if there was only one obverse die used, and you can match it to your coin, the other side doesn't need any detail for an ID. This is a long shot because chances are the die was used on more than one coin, plus the condition might make it tough to separate varieties. But there is a possibility. That said, I'm guessing dies didn't cross over dates very much so with a little effort I would bet you can date that coin. It really depends how many close matches there is.

Nice going on getting the double struck Conn copper, I believe Brian who posts here found a real nice one many years ago. I have a decent 1781 Irish Halfpenny that is double struck on the reverse side. Always a great addition to one's collection.

I don't think enough details are showing to ID yours, at least not with my ole eyes~ :D

I think it would take a CT guru to at least narrow down the variety in his head.

Here's my DS Georgie!

but it does not make you see what aint there any better. :tongue3: I am fairly certain you can eliminate 1785 and 1786 as the date of the coin, odds on favorite it is 1787, but a chance it could be a 1788, based on the star close to the C.

Here is the double struck reverse of my Irish Halfpenny.

Re: A Coin I'll Never Find Again Double Struck Conn Copper

Whoa - that's great Bob! :icon_thumright: Who would have thought that in two hours three coins could be found from two sites and they all be pre US mint coppers.... :hello2:

Just goes to show that anything can be found if you get in the right spots. ;D

Re: A Coin I'll Never Find Again Double Struck Conn Copper

Ok, I touched up the coin and looked again. The date line and date are both visible and the date is 1787. Don nailed it. You can't see it in the picture but it is there on the coin.

1787 is by far the most common so not a surprise.

Re: A Coin I'll Never Find Again Double Struck Conn Copper
