After hearing about the silver my brother (Illseeker) and his son were finding at the "hunted out" fairgrounds back in S. Illinois I just had to make a trip to help them hunt. The area we focused on was/is the midway. It is full of trash and has been hunted lots of time, but we still found silver. For the week our take from that area and the rest of the fairgrounds was 2 barber dimes, 2 mercury dimes, 2 buffalo nickels,2 washington quarters, 1 v nickel and a bunch of wheat cents. All were found at 5 1/2" +, except the 2 washington quarters which were almost near the surface in some rocks by the cattle barn.

For a side trip, we got permission to hunt a couple of vacant lots where a house used to be. Take from there was 2 washington quarters 2 mercury dimes and some wheat cents. Pics are of my finds. I'll let little brother post his.

We also did some park hunting for clad just to give us a break.

All in all a very good week. The 1st for me were:

1st Barber coin (reported a couple of days ago in a separate message)
1st Washington Quarter
1st 2 silver coin day - 2 mercs.

It's been a good one. Since June, my nephew & brother have pulled 19 barber & mercury dimes, 1 roosevelt, some v & buffalo nickels and several wheat cents. All are deep. I think he finally figured out how to tune his dfx to hunt the area. The signals are pretty decent but the dimes seem to jump between 74/75 up to the 90's, then the 80's and back to 74/75.

Add to that the 4 dimes (2 barber/2 mercury) we found there and that is 23 silver coins

Thanks. I have to tell on myself about the Washington Quarter. It came towards the end of the visit. After working all of the trash areas at the fairgrounds, I was used to getting good tones that wound up being the old fashioned pull tabs with the tab bent back into the ring. So we're on this private property and so far all I've found is trash and pull tabs. Then I get a solid 91 @ 5". I cut the plug, and still a solid 91 in the hole. I remove some dirt and nothing in the hole, so I scan the pile with my pin pointer and sure enough it's in a clump of dirt. I could only see a very little bit of the rim and it had a grayish tint to it. I yelled over to my brother what kind of nickel sounds off as a 91??? I took the clod over to where he was hunting to show him my strange nickel then looked at the edge and saw the reeding. Boy did I feel silly :'( Wiped some of the dirt off and there was my first Washington. I jumped around and smiled for a long time.

The other oddity of that lot. 3 of the 4 silver coins we found there were dated 1944.

Nice finds! I'm still looking for my first Barber.

lots of nice finds there,,, keep em comin.... ;D ;D ;D ;D

That's alotta diggin'! :o :o

Nice silver coins, waseeker! :)

Congrats on the 1st, that's a nice haul.

That is one excellent batch of silver you pulled from that site.

Nice haul of silver there. I still say the DFX and XLT are the best in trash, once you figure out what the VDI is saying to ya.

Congrats on the silver, you have to love those hunted out Fairgrounds. I hit one of the oldest in IL a few years ago with a couple friends. I'm in the middle and digging 1940 wheat pennies and my nephew on the left was digging Barbers, our friend on the right was digging Barbers. I'm looking left and right and waondering what the heck was going on. Needless to say I came home with wheaties and between them they had seven or eight Barber dimes, and we were told this place was hunted out. I did manage a couple Mercs the next time we went. Congrats to getting to hunt with your brother and coming away with silver!!

No great secret. As Rebel says it's just getting the setting right and figuring out what the VDI and Sign-a-graph are saying. We hunted with the hi-trash program, upped the pre-am gain and the AC sensitivity a bit. The dimes produced a consistent response although not one I would have dug a year ago. It bounced from mid-70's to low 90's with occasional hits in the high 60's and the 80's.
