A DOUBLE Indian Day!!! I've met my 2007 goal @ the farm.

Well, my goal for 2007 was to find a coin into the 1800's. I did that yesterday at the farm site. The farm & my $200 Tesoro continue to produce finds. Ya-hooooo!!!
My finds were:
*A 1874 Indian Head Small Cent. I'm no coin expert, but it looks to have sharp detail to it still. Sorry, but I had to clean it up a bit with dishsoap & a toothbrush. It was unrecognizable when I dug it up. I didn't even know what I had until I got home. I may clean it up a bit more to get rid of the brown spots you see.
I found it by a huge oak by the stream.
Any idea of the value of this coin?
To me, this was as exciting as finding that gold & diamond ring a few weeks ago.

*An old Hubley brand truck (busted).
*A green plastic Indian in the same hole as the Hubley. I'll call him Chief Hop-a-long.
*An old button with backmark of "Treble Plated" (1800-1840). This one was ID'd in the "what is it" forum yesterday. Thanks Ben.
*A "Climax" kerosene lamp piece dated Jan. 21, 1890. Also identified by a few members in the "what is it" forum yesterday. Thank you.
*An old button that I can't read the text on the back of. I provided pictures.
Can anyone ID this button?
*A small plain brass button.
* 1945 Wheat.
*A rubber comical PEA , I spotted by the stream. Maybe my new avatar?

I also went through about 40-50 shotgun shell headstamps that I have collected while searching the farm. Can you believe there were 18 different variation in there!!!
I need to make a decent display, and add to it as I find more.

So far a great year at the farm spot.

I love that Indian Head! The photo of the plastic Indian presenting it is priceless. The necklace idea sounds good. It might bring on some extra good luck and remind you of the lucky day.

Since you have two sand scoops, how about a trade? You pick out a chain and bezel (not gold please for the coin, and I'll order and pay for it.
How about it? The scoop for a chain.

Some times you have to clean a coin alittle to tell what the heck it is or to get the date! No worries.

I think its great that you found an Indian Head cent ........to you its priceless.......you had to clean it to see it, and to enjoy it......if you save coins for an investment, then maybe brushing it was wrong, but it only matters to you that you can look at it and enjoy it....so scrub on .......enjoy your finds.......your (unscratched and dirty unidentifiable )coins do you no good when your not here anymore..........HH

That would take a lifetime to clean that way. I called NCGS today to inquire about cleaning & coin grading. The girl told me that they consider dug coins or cleaned coins "ungradeable". She said they won't even grade them. That sucks. To me they have more character when they ARE dug up.

I just missed the one in Raleigh at the fairgrounds, It was on the 10th and the 11th. Take that IH to one and have a couple of dealers look at it just out of curiosity. Coin shows are interesting to visit, I can't afford to buy much at one, but I always like to wander around and look.

And as already been said, the fact you found it is priceless. I still haven't found one. And I'd rather find one in the ground than buy one at a show any day!

Sweet finds there MM!! And you are using a pos, I mean nice machine.

Love the toys and IH. That is a decent date IH. Also in nice shape.

As for Grading/selling coins. Butch in NY regularly finds nice coins - IH's, seated, barbers, SLQ's, etc. He sells them on ebay. He always puts in the description of the auction that the coin was recovered with a metal detector. He cleans them and gets very close to full readbook value(almost as much as a graded coin). Just last year he sold one Standing Liberty Quarter that went for $85. Also sold two IH's that got him over $125.

I wouldn't care if it was worth a penny or $100, I could never bring myself to sell an indian that I dug (when and if I get one ). That is just me, though. I still have all the clad I have dug squirreled away in a jar just because it means more to me than its actual worth. Maybe one day I will bury it so some MDer in the future can find a cache Nice find and I hope there are many more to follow.

Miner I love the pea.I think it would be a great avatar.The IH is a beaut.A soft cleaning is no worse then years banging around in circulation.I clean em all so I can enjoy them,no point looking at a pile of dirt and trying to guess its condition.Ive tried the olive oils and various methods and they do take forever with less then miracle results.

any IH from the 1870's is an outstanding find. cant put a price on a dug coin that you found with your own time and effort. so its priceless.

Thanks everyone. This IH is staying with me. The experience in digging one up is priceless.
I NEVER thought I would find a coin this old, or in this shape. I love the green patina on this IH. It may not be gold, but it was a "golden" find to me. I will pass this and my other finds to my kids. They may need to sell them to buy gas in the future.
What I thought was cool about that days hunt was first finding that plastic toy Indian, and then the IH coin. It was an omen, I guess?
I hope I uncover some more at the farm. Wait......I hear Chief Hop-a-longs voice in the wind now. He's whispering "come back Paleface, come back."
