Nice finds, I'm clueless on the bit bosses also. When I was a kid, I remember seeing folks on the plantations wearing those coins with a little silver chain around their ankles.

Love the coins and the bit bosses. I wonder if a trooper got into trouble for letting the horse rub that off the bit. In my time, being out of uniform was a big deal, but don't know about back then.

Well with as many buttons found, I wonder if most troops in the mid 19th Century just ran around butt naked???

No idea. They could have been rubbed off by the horses or just fallen off. The bridle could have rusted away and this was all that was left....No idea. Maybe someone out there has a more common reason....
