A few questions from a newbie

Hey guys,

I am a newbie to this, and am actually quite intrigued by the whole hobby of CRH'ing. I actually randomly spoke to a couple of people while playing poker and found out that they have been doing this since the 50s and 60s looking for 1909 vdbs and who knows what else was in the boxes at that time.

Anywho, a few questions if you dont mind. I stopped by a bank yesterday and picked up $100 in 50 cent coins. They looked to be someones dump or i just didnt get lucky. A lot of the coins were marked with a sharpie. The teller was very nice and offered to order me a box without me even having an account at the bank and added it to the list where someone else ordered 2 boxes. Now the question is this. Is it rude to ask where the coins which she sold to me came from, or to ask how many other people get their boxes ordered?

Question 2. for those who buy bags from the bank. TD Bank machines reject silver quarters. Does it also reject the silver 50 cent coins and the 40%? if so, what is the point of buying the bags, or am i completely missing something.

I would not ask where they get the boxes from.

If you ask about where they get their coins from, it might sound like you're casing the joint.

The best way to find out where they get their coins is to get a box from them, or even just a few rolls. Brinks rolls are clear shrink wrap, and they come in clearly branded "Brinks" boxes. I think String has NF String and Sons or whatever printed on paper machine rolls. I don't know what the others look like, it seems all the banks and everything here use Brinks.

1. I would say it isnt rude to ask tho the less light you bring to the hobby the better you are in the long run. If in fact the tellers are unaware of silver they may question why you care where they come from. You will gain experience by doing and will eventually be able to figure things out by doing and asking us.

2. As far as i know TD rejects all silver as i have found all types in the reject tray and have never seen a silver in a bag while they change them out.

A note on other machines is that they all differ on tolerances on what they reject or not and have found many that do not reject silver , tho around here [westchester NY] it is all but impossible to get a bag from a machine tho in other areas i have had more luck.

I find it's good to have a couple of non-silver, collectible or oddball finds my your pocket, and an Eisenhower dollar. That way, when a teller asks me what I'm up to, I can just say "oh, I'm a coin collector. I look through coins to see if I find anything old or interesting, like I found this 1919 Buffalo nickel, and it's worth a couple bucks", or I show them the two-headed nickel I found. Then either their eyes glaze over and they give you your coins without venturing into more conversation. Or a few of them think it's really cool, and become more helpful.

Now, in my case, it's actually the complete truth. I look for all coins that are more valuable than face, or are otherwise interesting (which just happens to include silver.) But the props are helpful.

The Ike is for when you're asking for "large size dollar coins" you can hold it up and they get that you mean "doorstop-sized coin".

Question(s) 1: Its not at all rude to ask. However, in most cases I think you'll find that the teller has absolutely no idea where the coins come from. I'd be shocked if 90%+ of the times you ask this question you don't get the answer, "From the Fed." I also don't see where it would be rude to ask how many others are ordering.

Question 2: I have no idea. The only way to know for sure would be to put a 90%er and a 40%er in the machine and see what happens.

I guess i was a little unclear on my question . I meant to say that it looks like someone dropped off the coins. So i wanted to see if its rude to ask for example if the person who dropped off the coins is for example the same person every week or something like that, to see if someone in the area already beat me to the bank, which is most likely the scenario.
