A few wheats, a little clad, a touch O'silver and a 10 spot
Well I've been doing my best at researching some good MDing sites. A task, which I had initially thought would have been a little easier, than what in reality its actually been. I started out today early, I had the day off from work due to the holiday tomorrow, and so I thought I'd try out one of the locations I had come up with in doing some research. I punched in the name of the location into the navigation system and off I went. As I was approaching the area I had intended to hunt I noticed a spot about 1/4 mile away that appeared to be an old picnic ground. It had some old style park benches, a picnic table, an old stone barbecue pit and some type of large stone lookout tower. I thought the spot looked interesting and it obviously was a spot that was active sometime between the 40 - 60's but was now essentially defunct. There wasn't really anywhere to park strangely, and so I had to pull off the road a bit up onto an embankment as tightly as possible as not to interfere with traffic. I got out my gear and was adjusting my headphones, just about to start detecting, when my eyes caught site of this $10.00 bill on the ground near the edgeline where the grass lawn meets up with some shrubbery/woods. I grabbed it up and thought "no matter what happens now I'm already ahead of the game". I started to MD and fairly quickly hit a good tone for a coin. My Garrett 1500 sometimes will indicate a penny but once dug the target will be a dime, however in this case it was a penny, a nice old wheat. (Before I figured out that the dime / penny signal would sometimes cross each other I used to eliminate the pennies because they are almost always corroded to death around here) The wheat penny was a 1944 and so I was encouraged that perhaps I would find some silver. Well the area of this park was maybe a 3/4 the size of a football field, and I worked it to death, slowly, all day. I would continue to get several wheat pennies but wasn't finding any silver, in fact I wasn't finding much of anything else. I was somewhat disappointed due to the fact that the site was the right type of place and I had found some good wheat dates so I felt that the potential for the silver was good, but I couldn't hit it. As I was approaching the end of the day an older guy on a bike stopped nearby and asked if I was having any luck. I told him not really and then he proceeded to tell me that back in the early 90's this park would have two or three guys with metal detectors going at it all the time, figures. I thought to myself "hell I'm already up ten bucks and some wheat's, what am I complaining about". Feeling tired, I was making my way back to my car, my arm was actually feeling sore from swinging all day (this is first time that happened) when I got another penny signal. I dug it, but I could not find the coin, so I filled the hole back up and as I always do, I swung the detector over the spot one more time, BAM. A real strong hit again, coin sized target down 1" deep. I said to myself this coin is not going to beat me, I'm going to find it if I have to go through the grass with a pair of tweezers. After a second, or two, I spotted it, not a penny but my second ever mercury dime. Sweet. Feeling triumphant, I went home. I walked in the door and waiting for me was a check from the lottery, from my seasons ticket. No it wasn't for big bucks just $10.00, but hey I'm not complaining. I'm on a little streak of good luck and tomorrow is my BD. So here's to lucky days and good hunting!
Thanks All and Happy Hunting
