This day started out like any other sunday I was going down to the southern tier to meet Jeff , a long time friend of mine that hasn't been out detecting in quite some time so this will be like a detecting reunion. Were both heading to a little country restaurant to meet Timmy and from there head to an area that may have a Picnic grove from the 1800's..... When we finally arrived we made our way to a grass field and started detecting , a few moments later I found a large brass Skeleton key .... 
The key was the largest I have found, so it will make a nice addition to my collection. We continued along a creek, up over plenty of hills and valleys...We walked and detected for hours and found plenty of shotgun shells and a few other items. After a few hours we decided to head back to the truck , we never did find the area we were looking for so we decided to have something to eat.
Now with that plan kind of out the window, we went to plan B. We were not far from an area that had produced some nice relics in the past ......So a short drive later we arrived . One of the cellar holes were up on a hill so we got right to it and after an hour we all had some nice items. I found an Indian head , Jeff found a nice pocket watch and Tim had some nice finds also. Then as I was detecting in a grass area near some large trees I got a hit down at least 12 inches and what I pulled out was a small silver box , now the first Thoth was coins and maybe gold coin........I was thinking about some of the finds I have heard about in the past. So now with Jeff walking over he said the same thing , " Its full of coins" .....Treasure Hunters!!!! There all the same. Anyway ,as we opened it all we saw was dirt and digging through it I seen what looked like a gun pin , then some rusted away earrings and a piece of cloth with something attached.......
Well what can you do, you have to just keep searching! so now moments later Jeff's Detector quits on him. It just keeps screaming and screaming, we tried everything ....Now that stinks, detector going down is not good so with some light rain now coming in we decide to call it quits for the day .. Its now 4:30 , Jeff heads home and Tim and I head north up the road, a short time later I see a field that was plowed by a farmer and is nothing but dirt not a shred of grass in it........This is the first time its been plowed that I can remember .....This area is very old and one of the oldest churches in the county is just walking distance away...So as I pull over Tim pulls over behind me , so I tell him Jeff and I detected just past this field and have found a number of early Large Cents...
Now as we both walk out into the field we see pottery, glass and pieces of red brick all the makings of a great place to hunt, moments later Timmy finds a nice small buckle. I decide to head over near the road and get a huge hit , dig down and pull out a very nice 1831 large cent .....
after an hour we have a few more coins and some early flat buttons......Now we know that Jeff had to leave early but I'm sure when we tell him about this site he will be more that happy to hunt with us in the following weeks.......With his detector now down , I will be more than happy to lend him one of mine. With plenty of area to cover and the finds spread all over this field , we barely scratched the surface...........Were looking forward to the return visit in the coming weeks! Keep on digging!!! HH
