I found my first large cent and my oldest U.S. coin this last Friday. I wish I could say it was at an old virgin site that is just starting to let loose of it's secrets, but I think it was just a piece of jewelry that was lost within the last 20 years or so. It's an 1836, holed, (obviously!) and there is very little corrosion so it unlikely to have been in the ground very long. Found it on a friends' property. House was built in the 1960's so no history there. Land probably been used for farming or grazing before that. I found another holed coin on the property the same day! A 1927 British penny. Somebody, sometime on that property must have liked coin pendants! They probably don't mean too much to you folks in New England, but to us here in SoCal, coins like that are pretty rare to find.

Most old coins were holed as a means to carry them. Clothes were handmade and most didn't have pockets because of the extra work involved in making them.
