Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
My wife and I took a trip to Ormond Beach, Florida last week. Naturally, I took my E-trac with me to see if I could find some old treasure or modern jewelry. Unfortunately, I didn't find either one on those "clean" beaches. I must have hunted 3 miles of beach in 3 days and only found $3.44 in clad. At about $1.15 a mile, I was getting a bit disappointed....except for this one find. It's a crematory tag from a cremation place in Ohio. After I came home, I researched the company and gave them a call to get some info and satisfy my curiosity. The lady on the phone confirmed my suspicions that this tag accompanied the body into the oven and then into the urn so they can make sure the loved ones get the correct ashes. I suspect that the family must have decided to scatter their loved ones ashes in the surf and didn't know that there was a metal tag inside with the ashes. I left my name and number with the company and told them that if the family would like to have the tag, to have them give me a call. So far, I haven't heard anything.

Definitely an interesting find, with all due respect to the family it makes you wonder if the tag has had some travel.

Uummm....eeeeww! Return it to where you found it. Did you ever see that Brady Bunch episode when they went to Hawaii?

Yea...put it back!!!

Really? You would base your life on what you see in a TV show? :icon_scratch:

No...the TV show was a metaphor for EEEEEEWWW!

If I found a burial badge...I'd put it back. That's my opinion. I'm sure you have your own.

No harm. No foul.

Cuda that is a strange find indeed.Normally ashes are scattered at sea but not close to shore it must have come in during storms.

Found one on the gulf side and called the cremation place and I received a short snotty curt reply stating that I could mail it back to them.

Thats real creepy to me.I would get rid of it as soon as possible. No disrepect to the dead.

Don't you love the disrespect? I found a set of car keys in the parking lot of a scenic attraction. This place has no one on site in authority, so I took them to the local state police barracks. The attending officer gave me that look of " gee, thanks. More paperwork." I thought he was going to refuse them for a second. You're trying to do the right thing, Cuda. My hat's off to you.

Thanks Old Dude, I've found the same response to most "official" lost and found departments. I realize that they're busy and don't have the time to actively look for owners of lost items, so, I'll continue to try and find them on my own. I like the detective work and stories that result. I guess it's a good thing that I found it and not someone squeamish about it. You're always going to find some people who don't appreciate your efforts, but most do.

You did the right thing, besides the tag was the crematorium's not the dead Persons personal property.
