......but what the heck is it?
Hi all. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Got out a couple times today. It was a school kind of day for me. Went this morning to an old elementary that gave me my 1905 English Penny last year. Got some battery money, lol. Decided this afternoon to go to a high school in the area that gave me some broken gold jewelry last year. The first target was a solid 71 on the AT Pro but sounded odd. Not that bright tone like a shallow Zincoln, but still an interesting one. Pinpointing put it at between 6-8 inches. When I first got it out of the hole, the thing looked like a nickel with the exception of a deep green patina. I thought I had found my second V nickel and started rubbing the dirt. I could see what looked like a shield and a date of 186? Was pretty sure I had a shield nickel. I got home and started rubbing it with water and fingers. Could still see a shield. After some tooth picking ( no HP this time! ) it seems the date has disappeared. I have absolutely NO luck with crusty coins. I measured the coin and found out it is NOT a shield nickel. The diameter is too big. Would be 20.5 mm if it were. A 2 cent piece is possible. They are 23 mm. My coin ( token? ) is just under 22.5 mm, but could have worn a half mm, I suppose. Please throw your educated guesses in and thanks for looking!

I guess two cent piece. I found one awhile back, and from what little bit of the shield I can make out, that would be my guess. Nice find regardless!

either a shield nickel or 2 center is my guess, heres a reference:shield.webpIMG00980-20130406-2129.webpIMG00979-20130406-2128.webp awesome find either way, congrats!!

I think it's a 2 cent piece the nickels corrode red and the coppers green

From pic #4 looks to def. be a 2 cent piece congrats ,

also soak it in mineral oil and toothbrush it

You are a coin & relic digging machine in hot weather OD!! WTG, Q.

Definitely soak it in olive or mineral oil for a couple weeks. Could be a coin or a token.

Thanks all! I have it soaking in mineral oil now. Will give it a week and try cleaning it a bit more. Wish me luck!

The answer is in how it signaled. Since it didn't ring in like a nickel, it is a two cent piece. Congrats!

Thanks Testing. The measurement ruled out shield nickel, and made the 2 cent very possible. Happy hunting to you!

Hey old dude I'm from nepa my self and I found my coin just like you said and mine did the same thing . I believe its a 2 cent piece and I think mine is a 2 cent piece to . when I found mine I found 2 silvers dimes and a buffalo nickel . But I left mine alone didn't want to mess it up. happy hunting in the great pa state.

Good job Old Dude, can't wait to see how your coin cleans up.

Sometimes oil kills any details, and makes them worse. It's pretty gunked up now so prolly won't hurt too bad, I've found using a lil baking soda with a drop of water and rub coin with thumb and index finger works well for green coppers . Good luck

Yep, it can't be hurt, I think. Worthy of the oil experiment, sadly. I have several LC's that were this bad and figuring they were beyond hurting, I used electrolysis and then baking soda with water to clean. Gives a unique color, lol. Thanks for replying.:coffee2:

You're kicking tail on the old coins there Buddy. First LC's, now a 2-cent. What's next, silver? :occasion14:
BTW- I've only dug one 2-center in 10+ years. :BangHead:
Congrats OD,
Doug

(Did you know that 2-cents is more cents that Q & D have?) :laughing7:
