......but what the heck is it?
Hi all. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Got out a couple times today. It was a school kind of day for me. Went this morning to an old elementary that gave me my 1905 English Penny last year. Got some battery money, lol. Decided this afternoon to go to a high school in the area that gave me some broken gold jewelry last year. The first target was a solid 71 on the AT Pro but sounded odd. Not that bright tone like a shallow Zincoln, but still an interesting one. Pinpointing put it at between 6-8 inches. When I first got it out of the hole, the thing looked like a nickel with the exception of a deep green patina. I thought I had found my second V nickel and started rubbing the dirt. I could see what looked like a shield and a date of 186? Was pretty sure I had a shield nickel. I got home and started rubbing it with water and fingers. Could still see a shield. After some tooth picking ( no HP this time! ) it seems the date has disappeared. I have absolutely NO luck with crusty coins. I measured the coin and found out it is NOT a shield nickel. The diameter is too big. Would be 20.5 mm if it were. A 2 cent piece is possible. They are 23 mm. My coin ( token? ) is just under 22.5 mm, but could have worn a half mm, I suppose. Please throw your educated guesses in and thanks for looking!

Yep, I would have guessed two cent piece as well. Sure seems like the soil you've been in lately doesn't like copper/bronze etc.
I usually leave coins alone but when they're really corroded, I sometimes experiment. I've even been known to get out a steel wool pad. LOL

Last resort, but, maybe.

Still, it's nice knowing coins of this caliber are in that ground. Just might turn up a gem.

WTG!

I left my first KG alone. It was special to me. My first 1700's coin. For some reason, I left my first and only V nickel as it was. Maybe because I could read the entire date? I really like this coin too, but let's face it....it's toasted, lol. If I am lucky, maybe I can get more detail...at least enough for a positive ID. Enjoy tomorrow:coffee2:

Hiya Dave! I found this at Northwest! Happy Memorial Day!

Really!?!? that school was only built in 1955.

Yes, but......what was there before? Ever notice the stone wall in the wood line across from the swamp? The house that sits beside it looks interesting too. We might have to do some door knocking there.

Good work, nice find

One more vote for 2 cent piece.

found something similar its soaking in olive oil nowmystry.webp

Don't give your spots away on the inter web! They might have some sort of search engine someday where someone could enter the word northwestern hs 1955 and perhaps come up with info on where that's located!

Thanks, Shawn, but anyone that wants it can have it, lol. I always figured that's why you see so many guests on threads here. They don't think they should contribute......just take. I was telling WVR because he travels right by this place to his parents' house. I knew he'd be surprised. I don't think this place has a lot of good targets even though the front lawn is huge! Because of the way the land lies, I am sure a lot of dirt was moved around. The area this coin was found was probably one of the very few that needed little earthwork. Again, Thanks for your concern and suggestion. I do appreciate it. Good luck!

I've given some sites freely also , but have also lost access to some because when there where 2 people a week doing it we where just those weirdos picking up stuff, but when it's several different people you get noticed a lot faster! If you got any spots on Long Island I'm all ears!

I actually met WVR because he recognized some of the fields I have hunted from pics I posted. I was detecting one of them and he drove up and introduced himself, lol.
I have none anywhere in NY, sorry, but am thinking bout making a trip to one city in particular there.

Yup a two center 23mm to bad about the condition..

All my old coppers are heartbreakers, lol. Thanks!
