A Heart Of Silver, A Crown and NOT Mom's Apple Pie!

Boy! What a day! I began my three days off on a somber note, but ended them today feeling much better.
As I was leaving work the other night I got a call from my father on my cell phone. It's rare that my father calls me, even more so on my cell.. so I suspected it was not good news. Relieved though, I was, that it was not about him, I mean with all the heart trouble he's had and is still dealing with the fact that he was calling me meant it wasn't about him. It was bad news though. Dad told me that one of my uncles had just passed away. An uncle on my mother's side, her next older sibling. My mom was number ten of eleven children and my late uncle was number nine, so yeah, they were close. Mom was too torn up to talk on the phone, so dad called to break the news.
As sad as it is to lose a family member, even extended family, we were all somewhat comforted that his sufferring was over. My uncle had cancer of the lungs and pancreas, he was terminal before it was discovered and still lived 3 months longer than the doctors had predicted. Painfull to say the least, he was in and out of a coma for the last couple of weeks. He had come out of it, the coma, the morning of the day he passed away, telling everyone about the dream he had while he was "sleeping". He had seen his late son, his father and his mother. (my late grandparents). He said that his mom had her arms out beckoning him as if to say it was time.... he passed that afternoon. Peacefully.
Somber, yes. Sad, yes. But the pain is over and the sufferring has ended... all but the grieving and the sense of loss that the family will bear for a while. *sigh*

Ok.. now that everyone is all bummed out I'll move on to a lighter note. Metal detecting. <smile> Of my three days off, I only went detecting one day. Yesterday. I started early and by 2:00 I was done. Both tired and ready to call it a day. I revisited the Soccer Complex, of course, and was duly rewarded for my efforts with a multitude of finds. TWO TRIPS to the garbage can! Damn! That was a LOT of can slaw!
Oh I found other things as well.. pull tabs, hair coloring (highlighter), BINACA breath freshener, some sort of acne cream or ointment. I found what I thought was a door knob at first.. but turned out to be the bottom of an aluminum baseball bat. There was the odd bits and pieces of scrap metal... and clad.. LOTS of clad. Pennies, Dimes and Quarters mostly.. with the occasional nickle thrown in the mix. <grin> And ONE token. I took along the camera with me today.. I mean Yesterday.. and experimented with some "panning" shots. I should remember to take the tripod so that they can blend a little more seamlessly in the future. Here's the field that I hunted today.. via a composite of three pics chopped and cropped together. <grin>

I found a pendant from a University that's just down the interstate from here.. Eastern Kentucky University... pendant or more likely a key chain "fob". Oh.. I found a key too, but nowhere near the "fob". <laughing>
Adding to my growing collection of "flipping" coins, I found TWO more coins today..er.. yesterday. One of them is rather familiar, in fact it makes the third coin of the same design that I've found at that park. The other coin was just a "Kick In the Grass" <laughing>

Pardon the pics.. I'm still experimenting with compiling individual pictures to save room for my posts... to get all the pictures in that is. <grin> Anyway, there are the two "flippers" that I found yesterday and the "fob" the key and the lone token.. and a penny for scale of course. That coin in the middle might look familiar to some of you, because you HAVE seen it before on here. Twice actually.. as I said, this makes the third one that I've found.. now I have "TRIPLETS!"

Man! It's fun finding those big coins.. even if they aren't legal tender. <grin> It's still a kick! Get it.. soccer.. kick.. oh never mind I amuse myself sometimes. <chuckle> Check out this collection of "flippers" or "Tossers" that I've found this year..

At one end of the field, actually between the parking lot and the playing field I happened upon this little gem. It was in two pieces so you might say it was two finds instead of one. It'll make another fine addition to "Fro's Used Cars" car lot. The inventory just keeps expanding all the time!

On the very opposite end of the field from the truck I found something near and dear to all our hearts.. metal detectorists that is.. SILVER!!!! At least I think it's silver, even though it's not stamped with a 925 or Sterling.. it has smith stamps. I have no idea what they identify or who they identify, but they are pretty cool.. so is the little ring.. here are a few shots..

On the inside of the band, well, the "crown" anyway, there is what looks like some engraving.. almost like TG..something

On the band were these three little "smith" stamps or whatever they are called officially... I took a couple of pics and played with the contrast and lighting to try to make them clearer.. Can anyone tell me anything about them? I know there are some experts that dwell among us mortals here at TNet.. <smile>

I know it's not the best of picture quality, but I was amazed at what I could get out of the camera to begin with.. those stamps are TINY! The ring is tiny.. Had to be a young lady with very slim fingers that lost this little keeper. I feel sorry for her loss.. but happy for my find! It was even prettier after I got it home and cleaned it up a little bit with a toothbrush and some water.. no chemicals used. I had to clean my hands too though.. I had other things to do besides sorting out and counting my finds for the day.. I had promised my fair mistress.. (my wife) a homemade apple pie. You see, after detecting for hours and she patiently waiting for me.. we stopped by a local orchard on our way home and purchased some fresh apples, and cider. So. Pie it was. Now I HAD to take a picture of this beauty! I've made some good pies before in the past, but this one was just PRETTY!.. Pretty tasty too! <slurp>

YUM! Oh my efforts were appreciated, of that you can be assured. Nothing like warm apple pie with a scoop of icecream to round out a very nice day. *urp* sorry.. <blushing>

Here's the "pile" o'stuff that I dug up yesterday.. taken at the park...on my digging cloth... at the picnic table... that my wife was so patiently sitting and waiting for me while I indulged in this crazy hobby.

And here's the pic of all the clad that I found for the day.. sorry, this pic was a little fuzzy.. I think I had the stabilization feature turned off by accident.. <rolling eyes>

$9.27 all told... not bad at all ! <grin> You got to love a hobby that pays you to have fun! I know *I* love it! <smile> It makes a pretty good balm for the spirit too.. to find lost things.. be they treasures or trash, everyday items and novelties alike.

Happy Hunting Everyone!

sorry about your uncle. :( love the claddagh ring. ;)

Thanks.. and I liked the ring too.. my wife wasn't very impressed with it though. <shrug> can't please everyone. Of course, had it fit her finger it might have looked somewhat "better" <grin> Oh well.. I had fun finding it... and learning about it too.

Happy Hunting!
