I was able to enjoy my Sunday back at the early 1900's house where I dug the General Service button about a week ago.
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,429083.0.html

This time it was a lot cooler so the mosquitoes let me be. I gridded off the whole yard this time but I discriminated out all the crappe' and just went for silver and copper coins and anything else that happened to give me a signal at that setting. I pulled another 13 Wheat pennies this trip, and the funny thing was out of 13 there was only two with the same date. How weird is that? ;D
Scored another Merc dime by the front porch, and a lot of other oddball relics including a toasted 5 Franc aluminum coin (1947-1959).
I was hoping there would be some coins laying with the old change purse frame, but no such luck. :(
Other relics were: cosmetic tins, Ford key, valve stem, two small buckles, large 30mm button (?), etc.
Unfortunately, everything seemed to fall into the 1940's era at this place. The grass on the other 8 acres was just too tall to detect in. Oh well, I gave it a shot.

Thanks for looking,
MM

Keep at buddy, soon the snow will fly back home and I will have to enjoy the southern posts! Take care you ole Hoosier  jgas

I think that oblong thing with the mesh on it is an old "boot lip" from an old National Geographic movie I saw :laughing7: Cool Dig's Doug

Great finds Doug!
I really like the different designs of those makeup compacts! :o
Who looses a change purse with no change in it! :BangHead:

I wonder if the site was graded or had new topsoil put down at some point in the 1940's or 50's? :icon_scratch:

Best of luck to you buddy, :icon_thumright:

Thanks Buddy.
You will have plenty of time to line up your spring digs soon. We need to connect next spring. My step-mom owns a 1900 house. Has to be some old bottles there.

Dave you may be right. I did see different types & colors of soil in this yard. Never thought of that. :icon_scratch:
Thanks,
Doug

That was my first thought as well. I got permission to hunt a mid 1800's homeplace a couple of years ago. I couldn't find ANYTHING before the 60's. :-X The owner came up to see what I had found. I had a tax token and a couple of pennies blah, blah, blah. I asked him if there had been soil added to the yard at some point and he said no. (I felt so inadequate :-X ) A couple of hours later, he returns and says, "Ya know, I've been thinking about it, and I do recall my Daddy bringing in dirt when I was a kid. :P Made me feel a little bit better about my skills. :D
You got some keepers for your effort tho. :icon_thumright: And you could always add the tins to your shadowbox and work.

Nana

Nana: I had the same type of experience. We were detecting my wife's grandfather's house in the back yard where they had the "summer kitchen". They sold the house in 1946. He was notorious for hiding money. After an hour of work and not even a nail, the lady came out and said she brought in 18 inches of dirt. We packed right up.

Nana,
I've seen you skills, so I know darn well it couldn't be that. You are a relic magnet in action.
As for those cosmetic tins, a girl can never have too many you know. :love1: :love5:
Thanks Girl,
Dug

Those 'Lady Esther's were popular :D
I got an example of the big concentric ringed one, mirror & puff still inside...
That small ornate buckle looks old, no?
I pulled a brass 'flappers purse' from between the stones of a wall, the frame was intact,
all the tiny star shaped pieces it was made from were scattered, they were all sewn together with thread, gathered all I could... no coins in mine either :icon_scratch:
HH to you

Doug, it looks like a cast piece, heavy and fairly crude.
if this is the case & no patent or manufacturers markings,
I'd guess pre 1800 anyway, maybe signifcantly earlier. :icon_scratch:
nice find!
