Out today with my usual diggin bud and did not get off to a good start thinking the crop was out at our 3rd NY site, but it was not. :( So we went to a huge field we've hunted twice and got very little, then tried a new place and got nothing, then to another place, tried the bottom and it just wasn't happening. There was a site at the top of the field so decided to try there and very glad we did. :tongue3:

First pic is my junk for the day, followed by my find of the day, an early fairly scarce Royal Marines Officer button with a nasty hole right through the center. Damn it would have been nice! But even so I am happy to have found it, and it looks like a much better candidate for restoration than I had originally thought. The third button is my friend's find, it's a Rev War Officer button. (King's American - 4th Regiment) Clearly they both have issues but we have never dug two officer buttons in the same day that were this rare in near 10 years of detecting together, so it was a good day.

PS... The last button has actually been cleaned. We kept a close eye on it, and upon close inspection it seemed removing the more patina would not increase the gilt so my friend decided to be happy with it as is. I'm pretty sure that's the right call because a black button with the same gilt you see would not be as nice.

Also check out the last pic, friend dug two "6" ringers?

I don't know how you do it I.P. Military buttons are few and far between where we hunt even though we've done our fair share of rev war vets houses. We even dig the appropriate low vdi's. Maybe soon but in the mean time you are the military button man for sure.

Here it's just a matter of digging and they will come. I don't hunt or find anywhere close to as many as I used to. 15-20% maybe.

Well you two did good despite the bouncing around from spot to spot you had to do.. Getting two buttons like that on one hunt should have you both feeling great despite the disapointment of not hunting where you intended, funny, how things work out that way sometimes.

Yeah and the bonus is we still have the place we had planned to hunt, as well as another that we've never tried, just nobody was around to give us the go-ahead.

Well, well, well, look what we have got here. Hey, it is that 6'0 235 pound of a detectorist hauling in those buttons. Hey, is that a Tiffin token? :laughing9:

I hope Scout is keeping you safe from that boogey man. :laughing9: Like you said, he was the last line and I believe it. :laughing9:

Thanks for posting, IP! :hello2:

Congratulations on some GREAT finds!!
Good job on not overcleaning that sweet button.

Amazing button finds!!! I'm hoping someday one will appear under my coil. Congrats!

"hi, iron patch" man i know how you feel. a couple weeks back me and the wife were detecting, and it was starting to get dark so i dug my last signal. the ground was like a rock so i was really hitting the shovel into the ground, and soon found what it was. i had hit a very scarce pre war toy truck with a cannon on it with my shovel, and it broke into a few peices i almost cried it kinda bugged me for a couple days cause i am a serious toy collector. but like you said at least you found it and it's still a good find, man i love them old bullets are them six rings i am counting on them. great finds. "god bless" ben.

Yup, you sure are the Rev War button king of Tnet. :notworthy:

Keep on sweeping that Colonial turf, IP! :headbang:

Must have missed this.

Shame about the hole, thats now another button I need to aim for  :D

You can one up me by digging the early bone back variety.

Nice IP! Is your friends button the same as your banner one?

Even your junk finds look better than a lot of posts I see on here (inluding a few of my own). Too bad about the first button. I call those bittersweet finds. It will still make a nice addition to your collection!

For the most part yes, except the size is different, 24mm vs his 17mm, and the cuff abbreviates the word Regiment.

I just saw your button again on the token thread, the patina makes it look like marble :icon_thumleft:
