A See-Through Squirrel Feeder

We have a few bird feeders for the several types of birds that visit our back yard. And we've alwaysbeen bothered by
the black squirrels robbing the seed. After trying several different ways to keep them out, I finally decided to make a feeder just for them. As soon as the snow came they started coming around again and decided they like their feeder. Even the birds use it some, if a sqiurrel is not using it. It's fun to watch them. Two weeks ago, there was a Dove in
the feeder and a squirrel started inand trapped the dove. I happened to look out the window and saw feathers flying in
the jar. So I went right out there and the squirrel ran for the nearest tree as soon as he saw me. The dove was breathing hard and just laying in the back of the jar, but He looked ok and went back in the house and watched him for a bit until he took off a bit later. JUdging by the amount of feathers he left behind, I figure he must have been down to his T-shirt
and skivies. LOL.

It took a while to get a good shot of one in the jar, but I finally got a couple.

Great pics!

Same thing happened here. Had one of those plastic bird feeders that looks sort of like an old coachlight or lantern: clear sides, black top, etc. The squirrels gnawed off the entire lid and dived right in! Sure enough, once the feeder was nearly empty, one of them crawled inside and had a heck of a time getting out!

Thanks, guys, for your responses. Yesterday it was snowing at a pretty good clip from before daybreak until about noon. A
squirrel went into the jar to eat. He must have liked it in there, because after he ate a bit he turned to face the opening
and sat donw. He stayed like that for at least two and a half hours. He must have liked it being out of the snow and
cold with the temp. being around 8 or 9degrees. When a bird would land on the front, he chased it away. LOL

Yup, you got it Peabody, This is only supposed to be a feeder. They are not supposed to take up resedence in it.

Did enjoy hunting them at one time. Up your way, Mich,
allowed use of a 22. In Illinois had to use a shotgun.

Again nice set up, but must take a pass.

Yeah, I'll bet it does feel cosy being out of the wind and if the sun is bright, it probably feels warm. But usually when you see one, there are 2 or 3 more close by.

One day before I put this feeder up they had been climbing the shepherd hooks to get the suet cakes, hanging upsidedown and
hanging on with their back feet to reach the cakes in tha suet-cages I put a little motor oil on the post from the curve to halfway down and watched the show from inside the house. It was so funny to see a squirrel get almost to the topand then slowly slide all the way to the ground on his butt. Sometimes he would get to climbing with his front feet moving so fast that they would be a blur and still slide to the ground.
But the oil didn't last a week when it got a bit sticky then they went up the pole like lightning. LOL

I have metal trash cans that I store in a tight little shed that I built on the back of the garage for that purpose.
I'm not interested in eating them anymore, I just get a kick out of watching them.
Thanks for the complement on the feeder.
I haven't even used any of my guns for a few years. Just clean them once in a while. Don't have many left, sold the
rest of them.

Ditto on the weapons. Seems like more and more
of my hunting buddies have been cutting back on
time spent hunting, or given it up all together.

Keep them clean, oil; take out every now and then and
do some plinking or shooting. Sell some off.

Seems to be the way things go when................
Must be time to sit around and tell old hunting stories.
