Whoopy---I got the silver monkey off my back.
Hard to believe but I found the thimble first and then the five LCs . I can't read the dates on any of them yet but hope they will clean up. It was a five hour hunt.
It is an old farmstead site from the mid 1800s. I also found the IH with some local wildlife included in the pic. ;D :D I will be smiling all weekend :icon_sunny: ;D My best hunt for sure.
Thanks for looking and best luck to all. Merf

Merf, the tumbled coppas look great. Have you surpassed the 20 coppa mark for the year?

That makes 15 so far this year Kyle----More than I found in the last two years.
I have met a few of the area farmers and gotten some good tips on some choice locations.
I put a couple of the LCs back in the tumbler. Hope to get a date off that one.
You guys out east there sure know how to find those Colonial Coppas.
I would love to find one of those but I doubt that many exist in Illinois.

Merf,

You never cease to amaze me. I think you've dug more coppas this year than 'ole Zoy there. :tongue3: And in Illinois to boot!

Nice work. That silver thimble is Gorgeous. I'd take that over a silver coin just about anyday.

Bravo.

Hey Merf, Outrageous finds there man ! 3 hours in the tumbler sure made a nice difference in those

babies . What are you using in your tumbler as media ? and are you using a rotary or vibrating tumbler ?

Keep up the great finds ! Gregory, Santa Fe.

Thanks Gregory----It is just a cheap Harbor freight drum tumbler.
I fill it a little more than half full of white aquarium gravel add about a half ounce of white vinegar and fill it just to the top of the gravel with water. I check the coins every hour and at a certain point , if I am seeing any erosion on the copper I switch to just water and the gravel.

An outstanding hunt! What I would give for 5 large coppers in one day . . . . . :)

I really enjoy looking at the macro photos of the coins being revealed, good stuff. I never stopped to think that thimbles could be made out of silver ;D

Merf, great post and super photographs. The thimble is a top notch relic to cherish, and getting five large cents by yourself on one hunt is great, I think we all wish we could do that at least once a year!

Don't count him out yet or any of us. Hmmm...we still need to hit a 1750s tavern site and plenty more Colonial-era sites. :icon_sunny:

Nice job, Merf, on the coppas! You are striking it rich!

Wow Merf, Great job on the large cents! Those came out nice from the tumbler too. Those are one of my absolute favorite coins to dig, there is just something about them.

Good luck on your next adventures!
