It's a really old nickel! The V stands for 5, roman numeral :)

The 3 cent should have III on it. Also very old, and probably worth a lot.

You got pictures of them? If not, what years are they?

The nickle is called a "V Nick" dates range from 1893 to 1913 "only 5 known 1913's exist",the 3 cent piece could be a 3 cent nickle or a 3 cent silver,what does the Obverse "front" of the 3 cent pice have on it..?

Best all around book for most american coins is the "Red Book" by R.S. Yeoman, available at most coin shops, even bookstores.

The three cent piece is probably in the 18 to 20 dollar range, the V nickel maybe a buck, and the cent, not much. Better to hang onto them for interests sake. Who knows? Maybe you'll get the collecting bug!


The Red book gives background on the coins, guides to pricing, guides to grading and general info on all American coins. Really a good place to start.
