Okay, so I was going to go out metal detecting at a park across town today only to get outside and discover I have a flat tire. With no spare, and lack of fundage to get it repaired, my car will be firmly planted until tomorrow when the banks open up. So, I came back inside and reheated some breakfast. I am now sitting here and thinking to myself; I live in the downtown area of my home city. An area that's been resided in since the 1850's.

Now, I doubt I'll find any civil war era goodies as the city didn't see rapid growth until after 1870, but there's gotta be some clad and possibly silver still laying in wait for someone to go get it, right? So, here's my vow to myself for the day;

I will go for two hours, or 8 square blocks (which ever comes first) swinging my coil between street and sidewalk. I've already hammered my apartment buildings yard several times, with the landlords permission of course. Heck, I even have a couple test pockets in the front yard. I further vow I will go in all metal mode, and not look at any of the readings, but rather pay attention to tone and sound. And finally, I vow to dig every solid target I hear. No cherry picking, and probably a lot of "damnit, another beer bottle cap"s.

The only downside is, I will need to jump blocks once in a while because there are several registered historic homes, not to mention the state capitol all within that radius of where I live. But by 3 p.m. cst, I'll post pics of what I find, junk
and all. Wish me luck!

I'm loving this thread. This is where research, patience and determination can potentially pay off. Please keep this experiment going! Good Luck and keep us updated just as you have. :notworthy:

I hope to be able to have another week or two at least before the ground gets too hard. It's been dipping to the freezing mark at night, but warming up to the 60's and 70's so far during the day. Thankfully, so far, a lot of the soil I've been digging is original soil. Might not be the case on the other side :D

I'm willing to fund your journey if you intend to take good pictures and document any interesting encounters. A one man "city search" is a story in the making. PM me and we'll further map your journey. I see a good story here.

Alas, with the rain and the temps not getting above 40 the last two days, or if you include the wind chill above too damn cold, I haven't gotten out. But take heart faithful readers, I've decided to continue this thread through the cold season. I will get out for the detecting as weather and time permit, but in the meantime, I will be posting information about the neighborhood itself here. Or rather, the more historical homes in the area. To that end, let me give you a bit of a history lesson about my home town.

While still the Kansas-Nebraska Territory, the city of Lancaster was renamed Lincoln and became the state capitol after various political maneuvers. One was the renaming of the city. Apparently, the politicians in Omaha thought that by renaming the city in honor of the recently assassinated President, owing to a lot of Confederate sympathies at the time. When it came time to vote on where the state capitol would be located, Omaha already had everything it needed to win, including the official state seal. However, the night prior to the voting, a group of men from Lincoln broke into the state house in Omaha, and stole the state seal.
Bringing it back with them to Lincoln, the Lincolnites held the political equivient to the crown jewels, and Lincoln was voted to become the state capitol. Who says the State of Nebraska is boring?? :D
