gratz id like to find one of them

I am not an expert, but it looks like a Civil War era Navy button Made By Scoville

I may be wrong on this, but I think someone posted this same button a few weeks back, and it was identified as being a Marine Corp button. Sorry, but can't help you any more than that. :icon_study:

Well heres a better pic of the back

I was wondering what you used to clean it up so good. I have an old button and have not got anything yet to clean as good as yours. I am new to this and can use all the help I can get. Thank you.

Regards
Dennis

i just used a little hand soap on my fingers and rinsed it with water. it came out of the ground in pretty good shape i was quite supprized

Thats a nice Marine button made from 1840 to the early 1850s. I'm guessing 21mm. Super nice find!
Mike

Close, but based on the backmark, which appears to be "Scovill MF'G Co. Waterbury" - it is 1850-1865. Excellent find and in suberb condition.

Congrats

Yep, I was looking at the wrong button. Albert's MC 10 and Tice's MC218a9. 1860 to post war. I want one!
Mike

Wow! That is a fantastic Marine button! The folks that said it was made 1850-1865 are correct as that is the correct manufacture dates for that backmark. It is highly probable your button was worn by a Civil War soldier. The button has a very good value too , see the link I added.

I would definately carefully pound the entire property to see if more were lost. If you want to search for cuff size too, the cuff size will probably register in the square or round tab area, that is where most cuff buttons register on my detectors.

I also wanted to add many nice dug buttons are more valuble to collectors as they know it was more likely to be associated with a soldier, whereas a new looking non-dug probably sat on a shelf for decades until it became outdated.

There is an old cemetary that buts up to my back property line and the entrance used to run through my property the latest date ive seen on a stone in the cemetary is 1875. my house was built in the 1800's and ive found a couple of large cents and a canadian half penny token one of these days im going to get a real metal detector and maybe then ill find silver lol

i tried the whole backyard thing last summer when the ace had arrived new. all i found was a dozen or so beer bottle caps from when the guys had put the swimming pool in yrssss ago ??? neat button...HH tlc :icon_sunny:

Nice button and great detail.

Thanks for the cleaning tip. I have not put any cleaning chemical on my button. I was scared I would mess it up. I will try regular dish soap. That is a nice MC11 button. Keep up the good work.
