I was scanning some aerial photographs on Google Map when I spied a secluded beach in a local lake in a private gated subdivision. The beach had been there a long time even before it became a gated community. There is a public county boat ramp so Victoria and myself drove our kayaks over to the ramp and a short mile paddle placed us at the private beach. We anchored our kayaks,pulled off our floating sifting boxes and started hunting. I started to recover quarters left and right and assorted changed, all clad. I must have had the spot where the guys were doing hand stands or somebody had a pocketful of change that amounted to a total of $4.20. Victoria didn't fair as well finding a encrusted silver ring, about $2.22 in assorted change but she managed to find 4 "Wheaties" from the 1940's and one 1955. I was hunting nearby Victoria when I got a low tone like a nickle and scooped the signal, shaking the sand from the scoop and checking the hole and knew the target was in the scoop. Gold glinted as I retrieved the ring from the scoop and then I saw a lovely diamond sparkling in the bright sunlight. Looks to be about a caret and will have it appraised by a jeweler ASAP.
"Ahem, oh Victoria!" She couldn't believe I pulled that ring not 6 feet from where she was standing. I was beaming, always love finding a diamond ring especially women's rings. The setting is 10 kt and its been underwater for sometime as it needs a good cleaning. We'd been hunting for about 4 hours and the beach was getting crowded from residents and their ski boats and jetski's and we were pretty tired and had a mile to paddle back.
We were driving home when we passed a little county park with a Tot Lot and Victoria wanted to stop and hunt it. I found a shady spot and told her I was going to take a well deserved nap. I guess I drifted off for about 10 minutes when Victoria shook me awake all excited. She said "Look what I found under the swings!". It was a gold bracelet stamped 14 kt Mexico that later weighed at 10.4 grams or about $168.50 scrap gold price. She hunted about 1/2 an hour and called it a day and I got about a 20 minute nap so I didn't have a problem with the 90 minute drive back to Clermont.
There must be hundreds of county parks in Florida alone and probably several times that number of private beaches in lakes and seaside beaches that are only accessible by boat. I seriously doubt that beach had ever been hunted since it yielded those 4 Wheaties. I was talking with one of the boaters who told me about a secluded area called Beercan Beach located in another secluded lake so I'll be studying those aerial photographs for a future trip.
