Found while walking beach with dog. No detector besides my eyes and dogs nose! Not sure on specifics other than measurements.
Diameter- 7.8” weight just over 44 lbs.
found on beach in panhandle of Florida a few miles from civil war forts

Believe it’s a Union Mortar shot from an 8” Siege Mortar. Did some research and discovered the ACW Fort did have and shoot some of these mortars.

Any ideas?

AH1Cobra...welcome to TNet...great find...there will definitely be someone on this board who can tell you more about your find and how best to preserve and more importantly to tell you if it may still be dangerous, if you don’t already know how to determine if it is or not...good luck with your hunts...Walt

Thanks for the welcome! I had never considered that finding something like this was ever possible. I am amazed at how much it has been speaking to me though. Not actually of course, but it has stoked my curiosity in the story behind it.

Awesome relic, congrats! :occasion14:

First, congrats on the awesome find. If it is a salt water find then your best bet is to put it in a bucket of fresh water for now. Change the water every week or so. If may start cracking if it dries out. To preserve for good, you would need to run it through electrolysis and coat it. Can you see all the way through to the powder chamber? If so, I would flush out the powder with water if there is any left. If not, I would get someone who knows what they are doing to deactivate it for you.

Superb find, congrats! Given the fact that it was an eyeballed surface find there is a very good chance that others are lurking in the area. You should go back and scour the area, and if you don't have a detector then find a steel rod to use as a probe to poke around and hopefully find the ones still hiding.

I don't know anything about civil war projectiles but that is an incredible eyeball find!!! Congrats!

Boom baby thats a sweet find
