African carved wood statues, information needed.

Hello friends. I found this at a yard sale today. Does anybody recognize the art? Two men standing, and one at bottom. Seems to be all three holding a picture frame. Wood got wet since it rained earlier. Any details would be truly appreciated. Thanks.

Funky item.

The panel likely once had a mirror. It’s ‘Tiki’ folk art and probably circa 1960s-1970s. Tiki is the Māori name for the first human, often represented in the form of ‘hei-tiki’ and this kind of work is culturally appropriated from Polynesian, Melanesian, Micronesian, Australasian and Caribbean regions as well as Hawaii. For pieces turning up in America, Hawaii is a likely origin (as tourist souvenirs), but not the only possibility.

This one, from an Australian seller, was being offered in the belief it was African, but it isn’t.

The seller wanted $230 Australian for it ($156 US), which I think is way too high. I wouldn’t pay more than a quarter of that.

From time to time I will see vendors at flea markets with similar items (carved wood figures and masks). I my experience they usually fit the time frame Red-Coat has already provided. It makes for an interesting collectible.

As long as you didn't buy this tiki you should be fine.
