Hi all,For the longest time I was abit of a skeptic when folks would talk of using all metal.I'm abit set in my ways sometimes so never really gave it a shot.Well the other day I decided to try it out and see what happened at one of my favorite sites. This site is in an open hayfeild out in the country and has given up alot of nice old coins and relics over the years but for the last couple of years I have found pretty much nothing at all there.Every now and then I might get lucky and find a flat button but that was about it.

I headed up there early Sunday morning thinking I was at least going to have a nice peacfull cup of coffee and relax abit.I decided to use my Minelab x-70 with the 6 inch DD coil as there are ALOT of iron signals there.I started swinging the coil and listening to the tones.Every now and then I would get a mixed tone and dig.I found 9 flat buttons and an 1818 large cent and every signal I dug had bit's of iron in the same hole.I think I'm going to really like this all metal thing !

Pinpointing was abit difficult useing pinpoint but by passing my coil over the target from different angles I could pinpoint pretty well. The depth of some targets was allso pretty impressive. So I guess the moral of this story is you CAN teach an old dog new tricks ! ;D

Photo is of my finds from the hayfield the other stuff Pin,boyscout pin, ring and deer button came from a friends yard. HH all !

Yep. All-metal really improves your finds in trashy areas

Thanks y'all ! I cant wait to try that new style out at some of my other sites....C'mon weekend ! Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I tried allmetal at an old school that I've pounded to death allso.I played hookie from work last thursday and hit the old school.I found a 1942 walker that day ! It was in an area that i'd been over a 1000 times and was down about 11 inches. ;D

Those are nice finds.

I hunt the same way dig anything above iron and sometimes even the iron. I don't wanna miss anything.

Very good post and refreshingly different.

I come from the old school of THing and we all started with all-metal mode hunting cause that's all there was.

Funny back then we saw no need for discrimination.

Today discrimination is needed due to so many hunting our parks and whatevers.

But, whenever a sites where I can aggressively dig runs out of finds I shift to all-metal mode hunting.

I did this here at an old fur trapper site a few years back and my very first signals were a cannonball and French trader knife (ca. 1760's).

I try to tell youngsters today that discrimination, meters, and tones, are causing them to miss lots of great finds by few believe it.

One day in my coin garden I buried a $5 gold piece deep and the reading I got said don't dig it.

Thanks,

Badger

Thanks Badger ! I think I was spoiled abit when I got my first detector with discrimination and missed alot of nice finds because of it.I do think that the different tones are the best improvment that I've seen in detectors.I like the idea of having the ability to have a fairly good idea of what type of metal the target may be.

Have a good one y'all !

OK OK I gotta get out and hunt know. All metal mode here I come. Thanks for sharing.

Great finds!!! Especially the walker!

I've always known that all metal gives one more depth, and on occasion I have used it. But not often. All those signals drive me crazy!!

I also one day, decided I was going to run in the all metal mode and dig out those deepies.
I picked out a spot by an old tree in a local park, and marked off a 3' X 3' square and started
digging signals... I lost count after 100. I really think I had landed on the very trashiest square yard on the earth. I never repeated that episode, as that square yard of ground looked like
it had been strip mined. And, to add insult to injury, not one signal was anything good... all junk.

Been there allso, but if you use a small coil and listen to the tones you can get a pretty good idea what is trash and what isent. You should give it another shot I did and I'm glad I did !
