Just plain amazing. Couldn't find the road to take to tibble reservoir and ended up here. Took the lady with me and we found this huge boulder that was most likely left by glaciers or an massive Avalanche. So here I am digging bucket after bucket and I swear I told her "take these buckets and dump them by the stream. We will pan them over there." Well she comes back after 6-7 buckets and says.... "What do you want me to do when the stream clogs up?" .......... I could tell by the look on her face that the gears were just plain stripped in her head.... Oh lord.....

We saw a deer watch us from about 100yd away. Just watching us pan away... Probably was saying to himself.... "Ain't no gold there jack." My dog was too dumb to even notice the deer. He just kept running in circles. Turns out the deer was right.... No gold here boys and girls.... I'll check out Tibble next weekend. Heard they are draining it and building a new dam...

Yes, very scenic. Not at all the way I picture Utah in my head! ...As for the rest, well.... :dontknow:

When most people think Utah they picture scenery like arches National park, lake Powell, Zion National park. Or Moab.
But that's just southern Utah. Northern Utah is quite a different place. There is reason our licence plates say greatest snow on earth. We are in the Rockies after all. 😃

I wish I would have read your post on other thread Saturday night saying you were going to check out A.F. canyon. Went there Sunday also. Could have taken you to a few decent spots and let you try out a bgt. I always carry both my prospector and sniper in my truck at all times. Sounds like you just missed the turn to tibble fork. It forks left off main road a little ways after the timpanogos cave (check it out if you haven't, awesome cave)
When I first started going up there (last year) I talked to one of the rangers and asked him where I should look for gold. He gave me 4 places. Even though there is gold the entire stretch of river.
Mary Ellen's gulch
Major evens gulch
Shaffer fork
Dry fork.
You can also dredge those areas. As long as you get the FREE permit online.
Definitely one of my favorite canyons, not just because if the gold. But that helps 😉It's a beautiful canyon. That's why tibble res is the second most visited F.S. Park in the nation. And also why there is usually a fee to go up. But if your going up past dam and the restrooms they won't charge you. The road gets pretty darn tore up past dam. I would recommend something with higher clearance. Although I do see cars farther up. That road will also take you over to midway, really nice drive.
They redid silver lake res. Last year. Tibble is scheduled for this year. They are raising the dam level. I'm hoping there will be some good material exposed. Good luck next weekend🙆
Also they sell a really good map of that area at the pay station at mouth of canyon. Shows ALL trails and mines.

When I visited, I came over from Park City via Midway so...no fee!

Best gold I found was just below the reservoir in bedrock cracks.

Thanks for sharing guys! I'll be going to BYU in 2018 so I'll need somewhere to get my fix. Any of the mines around there worth checking out? Maybe some free milling gold ore laying around?

bYU is quite close to American Fork Canyon AND a lot of almost unknown places in the foothills just east of Provo...go exploring with a pan!
