Hello Folks
I was out detecting one of my favorite places and recovered this. The area I recovered it from is near a stream and is kind of a hollow in the woods. It was about eight inches down in the soil.
From my quick research and what I have been told so far it is a 3000 plus year old copper adz, or copper celt .
I am going to try to get an expert opinion from someone on staff at one of the local big colleges nearby, in the meantime feel free to burst my bubble if you don't think it is what I have been lead to believe.

Hello Folks
New York State and Vassar college archaeologists have confirmed that it is a copper adz, one commented that it is a very fine example. From what I gather in their emails it dates from 1500 to 3000 BC so 3500 to 5000 years old. In order to narrow it down to it would have to be submitted for chemical analysis.
I appreciate everyone's help in identifying this object.
Happy Hunting

I put it in for banner, don't know why it's not yet

It's just not worthy :sadsmiley:
I would say a Copper Culture celt hundreds, more likely a thousand years old is much more "Worthy" than a small dick of copper minted in 1793.

Banner vote, congrats

What is a "small dick of copper"? And don't tell me it's what I will find on a copper statue of Michaelangelo's "David". I realize it may be a typo but I can't figure out what the word should have been.

Very awesome finding something so old in the Americas! Its not much to look at, but amazing to think of the people using that, still 2500 to 5500 years from Columbus being born!

It would be nice to know the provenance of the metal itself.
If it has little silver flecks, then the parent material would be from Keweenaw, MI.

The copper here has been found in New Jersey, Washington State, Louisiana, Mississippi, and I guess New York!
There are plenty of researchers whom would like to know about this outstanding find, just for WHERE it was found.

It's design is consistent with MANY others.
