Which detector should I choose is a very common thread on the forums. We all have a favorite or two and are often overly brand loyal which really doesn't help the person asking. I'm suggesting that the new buyer research the different choices seriously considering the options that they know or think they may need. If possible, get a hands on opportunity to try it. However the point I'm really wanting to make here is IMHO the poorest advice offered are the stories of this machine found such and such that machine found this or that. In nearly all cases that is strictly a matter of passing the coil over a target that most or all the detectors would have found had they been swung over that same target. Once in a while, an especially deep or elusive target is found by a particular detector that is in the hands of an experienced user that had it set just right and the story is interesting or even somewhat astounding. Stories like this are interesting, but not much help to the person trying to decide what detector they should purchase. Weight, ergonomics, coil selection, manual or auto ground balance, discrimination characteristics, how well does it handle wet salt sand?, is it usable for prospecting etc. are much more practical answers for the newbie.

Good points indeed, that's why I never suggest detectors to people, for a el cheapo detector can be more effective than a top of the line unit, depending on the operators experience on the machines. And that's what really matters.
