There was a horrible picture of the keys victim......it was sobering to see !! Be careful and trust your instinct....if it seems dangerous it probably is !! Everybody watch your back, and use the buddy system or you could just disappear !!

I work in, on, and around the water every day. I also live in some of the most dangerous mosquitoe environments in the US zika, dengue fever, west Nile, etc. I've dealt with some grumpy dogs a time or 2 also. Sharks are also a major concern for me due to the nature of my job, and the frequency of me entering the water....especially in the summer. I apologize if this post/thread offends you, but I'm just trying to make people aware that it is the season for shark attacks as happened recently in Florida. And that lulus law will soon be passed, and I think an amber alert for shark attack activity is very good for the public, and thats what my 2 recent posts were about. No harm with keeping abreast of recent developments and shark activity ?? Right ?? I'm not trying to scare anyone, or be a doomsday shark guy...just awareness brother.

Seems there's an unlimited number of creatures that can kill us; sharks just happened to be more well known. But just think what the swimmers in Australia have to deal with. Not only do they have very large and nasty sharks, but they also have to be concerned about the Box jellyfish, which is the world's most lethal jellyfish. It's said that the venom of that jellyfish is approx 1,000X more lethal than a Cobra. If you get stung by that one, you start getting paralyzed almost immediately and have about 20 minutes of life left. The danger with the Box jellyfish is some species can be VERY small, the size of your thumbnail, and to make matters worse, they're also transparent.

I watched a documentary about these critters, and scientists were having extreme difficulty capturing some to study, because the tiny size and transparency made them impossible to see. The documentary went on to say that swimmers at Australian beaches, even men, wear women's hosiery to protect their legs and lower waist and wear long sleeve shirts to protect their chests & arms. Man, at least a shark is big and can be seen, but swimming in water with the world's most lethal jellyfish that's the size of your thumbnail, transparent, and can't be seen, that's a whole nuther level of danger. ⚠️

You didn't bother me at all. This is a great thread. I had an offshore boat for 25 years and fished the lower keys several times a year. Ive seen and been in the water with sharks several times. Only one time did I think "oh shit!" My wife and I were snorkeling Loo Key and swam upon what had to be a 12 foot shark. Enormous and sobering. It glared at us and slowly swam by as we just hung there motionless. Your job does put you in harms way with sharks much more than the average person. I was just making a point about how rare shark attacks actually are.

As sand swinger says....there's so much out there that's possibly harmful...sharks are the violent horrible nightmares most people think of. Lately I've been more worried about the microscopic level of attack from the flesh eating bacteria!! One small cut in the dirty hot water and it could be just as bad as a shark attack....only your leg comes off as it rots....if it doesn't outright kill you !!

As sand swinger says....there's so much out there that's possibly harmful...sharks are the violent horrible nightmares most people think of. Lately I've been more worried about the microscopic level of attack from the flesh eating bacteria!! And flesh eating bacteria is definitely a real threat, as my family found out personally My brother-in-law's brother was out in the water pulling up crab pots to check. When he pulled up one of the pots, there must have been a piece of metal sticking out or a corner, and it scratched his leg. He didn't think anything of it, I wouldn't have either. My wife constantly asks me where I got this or that scratch. I look down because I didn't even know I had a scratch, never felt it, have no idea how I got it.

Next thing we knew, his leg started swelling up so he went to the hospital. They tried everything to get it under control, even spoke with him about possible amputation. They kept pumping him with all sorts of drugs to fight the infection, but then he developed sepsis which quickly spread throughout his body. Next thing we knew, he had passed away at the hospital. Who would have ever thought that a guy could get killed by a crab pot, just a really freaky accident.

Florida has had an uptick in these "Vibrio" flesh eating cases lately. Many resulting in death. A guy a few years back right here where I live was cast netting bait at a local park. He had a cut on his leg that got infected from water dripping off the net. He nearly died and was sick for months.

Bet he looks back and thinks how it would have been cheaper to just go and buy live bait from the bait shop.

2015 when I was 60 I was on a dock heaving an 8' net for shrimp that were hugging the shoreline when I heard a loud pop from my hip. Thought I had dislocated the left hip socket and could hardly walk. Turned out I tore all three hamstrings off and ended up getting surgery to get them re-attached. That bucket of shrimp I got that day was the most expensive ones I ever caught. Needless to say my cast net days are over with and buy my shrimp now.

This is something (for me imparticularly )to really think about !

When I'm detecting at the beach in the fall, winter, early spring, I'm wearing waders. I don't go too far out in the water, usually knee deep or just a tad beyond. But during the hot summer season, I usually just wear my bathing suit, diver booties, and a light colored long sleeve shirt to protect arms from the sun. I think from now on, I'll give my legs and arms a good look over just to make sure I don't have any scratches or cuts. My wife constantly asks me where I got this or that scratch. I look and see the scratch, but had no idea how I got it, didn't feel it.

As a kid I was fascinated with sharks and I have been swimming when I had a sand shark swim right by me and my girlfriend while we were picking up sand dollars, I also had an experience when a school of hammerheads came up from South America because of the El Nino, changed the water temps, I was on my surfboard laying on top sunning when I got bumped and I looked over the edge and saw about a 13 or 14 foot hammerhead swimming by not a fun experience. One of our teachers aides saw me reading a shark attack book I had and she asked me if this guys name was in there as a shark attack victim and I said yes and she told me he was her boyfriend and she witnessed the whole attack from a bluff overlooking where he was skin diving for abalone of the California coast him and a buddy were skin diving while their girlfriends were on the bluff. His attack was a great white and they never found him, all that was found was a mangled swim fin, his friend said the last thing he saw was the upper half of his friend in the jaws of the shark as it swam below. I remembered his Name it was Robert Pamperin it happened in La Jolla California by Alligator rock.

Im not a doomsday guy....im not trying to scare anyone....im also not gonna sugar coat the situation and make another comment about how great the sharks are and how its just the normal way of things.

This is the truth
These sharks are over protected, over glorified, and far from being endangered. I fished on the biggest federally permitted shark operation in the United States!! We were the top producing shark boat in the USA for 10 consecutive years in a row, we also sat on the council for shark fishing at the national marine fisheries. You may have been led to believe sharks were over fished....and they might be in certain parts of the world, but here in the US, and bahamas they are booming to the point of over population because of lopsided protection policies that have allowed them to be disproportionate to the rest of the ecosystem. How do I know this you ask....because we were also the top research boat also !! We participated in more tracking and tagging programs than anyone else in Florida. I was ridiculed and harassed by activists and protesters. I was labeled a monster and a butcher, and had to fight in court to have images of me that were used with out my consent to wrongfully accuse me of illegal shark finning.....I was a legal shark finner for 20 years.....it was a glorious job and was similar to fighting in the coliseum every day !! Limited and monitored shark fishing is necessary folks....as ugly and bloody, and gory as it is !!

Jupiter Florida fisherman has seen 7 different great whites last week....1 a day everyday last week !!😲 way above average great whites sightings this season, and last attack at the navy base is thought to be a great white !!

They’ve protected the seals also now there are millions and millions of seals what comes next hundreds of great whites well they’re already here now. Be safe. Have fun, but don’t let it stop you from doing things that you love!

I wouldn't want to look like a seal by wearing a black wetsuit and detecting in chest high water, no mobility for the human, full mobility for the Great White. My waders are light gray, and I usually don't go deeper than knee deep, maybe a tad more.

Great Whites are so large & round, that if one come's in to check me out, he's gonna beach that big belly of his on the sandy bottom before he gets anywhere close to me, I hope, lol. 🦈
