Can someone explain this one for me?

Example:

"Looking for a buddy to go metal detecting with in East Nowhere."

Why are some people obsessed with having a metal detecting partner? It makes no sense to me for two reasons:

1) Neither "buddy" is going to bring his partner to any of his best spots, so both of them will be hunting in a place where they wish they were somewhere else.

2) Once you put the headphones on, you are alone anyway.

Maybe its just me, but I would rather go by myself to my best location. If you need a buddy, meet him somewhere for a beer afterwards.

I can think of several reasons to go with a partner. Safety, split the costs of gas ect, cover more area looking for home sites no longer visible to naked eye are just a few.

Who pissed in your corn flakes? Judging by your posts I see why you hunt alone. I personally enjoy the company of others & have a group of 5 or so friends I go out with on a regular basis & we have a blast. As a group we have some great sites & made a lot of good finds. I enjoy seeing others find something great even if it makes me a little jealous at times! It's also dangerous to hunt alone in many situations. You won't catch me by myself in the woods alone this time of the year.

Some of us are lone hunters, I am one. Everybody is not the same.

Some people like hanging out with buds if like mind and some do share their good spots (maybe not all their spots).
They all have to get along well for it to work. Like TH said safety, there are many reasons.

Safety is a fair reason if you're hunting in a ghetto. But even then I feel safer with Mr. Glock than a buddy to find my corpse and call the meat wagon.

I guess my next question is: Would you take "buddies" to your best locations?

Let's please keep posts civil and by our rules. .....

I'm primarily a beach hunter and have several partners depending who is available. I also hunt parks and have had hunted with partners there as well. Now this doesn't mean if I had a honey hole I would or wouldn't share...

Not sure who did it, but I wouldnt mind being next one to do that.
I gotta subscribe to this thread, I can't wait to read what's next in the mix. I might even start one about " scuba diving alone?" That will get a few purists excited I bet......

I don't hunt in the ghetto, mainly woods. A gun isn't going to do you any good if you get bit by a snake, break a leg, get lost etc. I do take my buddies to my BEST locations & they take me to theirs. I have run across some people that are takers (not givers). I eventually figure it out & they don't get invited again (then they get to see my finds on here lol) My buddies have found some great relics at my sites as well. Was I jealous? Yes, a little! BUT, those relics may have never been found if it was just me & they would lay rotting in the ground. I've also made great finds at their sites & they got skunked. One spot in particular had a Rev War camp & my goal is to find it. (We found part of it) That's hard enough to find with 5 or 6 people. A single person could walk through one of those camps a few times without realizing it.

Now this doesn't mean if I had a honey hole I would or wouldn't share...

Exactly, thank you. Another example - fishing is a much more "buddy friendly" sport than treasure hunting, mainly because you can joke around and carry on conversations in the boat at the same time. But even so I still have certain productive fishing spots where the only other people I ever bring there are paying clients. When you're metal detecting, there is no conversation, so why would anyone want to bring a buddy along? I know I wouldn't.

Sammiches!
I'm usually floating around in the Atlantic, with a bunch of other ppl frolicking, I can look down south a few blocks, and just about every time, I spot my water buddy working her way north to me.
She brings the sammiches. :laughing7:

Oh, plus, it's a real big Atlantic and beach. Enough room that we don't bump in to each other. :laughing7:

That's why you can never starve in the desert........".because of all the sand.....which ....is .....there " ......( I know....groan😊)

The problem with hunting alone these days is that if a significant find is not viewed by another or recorded via video by finder, it's deemed planted. What a shame!
Peace

I am a lone hunter and just love hunting by myself ..and i am not going to came back and say well if i hunted there or if this might happen then i would hunt with a buddy………… Nope i am not a politician that changes my mind by what others think and say …. I like hunting alone .. And when i have a ..significant .. find why do i want some one else to know about it …?????????

This past week is the first time my mister and I have taken anyone with us detecting and we had a blast. These two guys a in our metal detecting club and we took them to a spot we got permission to hunt that had good potential. We didn't find anything but our friends did and the camaraderie was much more important to us than finding all the goodies.

Well, I can go either way. I don't mind hunting alone if I am in a place where I feel comfortable. But, I enjoy hunting with someone too. It is fun to share your finds and see what others find too. It is just hard to find someone who is fun and that you can trust. Would I take them to a good place, Yes, if they would do the same for me. But, lets face it, most go to a new place alone first, then they tell you to come along with them. It is just human nature I guess. I know I take my Grand niece with me whenever I can and Love it if she finds something really good. I can go either way.

I enjoy hunting with others and could care less who finds the goodies. As a matter of fact I hunt with a couple guys that if they find a silver coin or some other goodie I'm happier for them than I would be for myself. This hobby is just that for me a hobby. Some take it a little more serious than I and for me that would take the fun out of it at least for me.

When I find a site with that has nice finds, I stop hunting it so my friends can come back with me and hunt it together...they do the same thing. I don't know what you mean by not talking when you detect. We talk back and forth all day long, whether were hunting an old home site or hunting at the beach. Plus we BS on the drive to our site. We have a blast. When I hunt by myself its not even close to as much fun. Do you have friends that would go with you? Ive fished all my life and wouldn't even think about not taking my friends to a honey hole, having someone share something with me is half the fun.

Myself I would say 95% of the time I am detecting alone. I talk to co workers and family members about mding and finds what not and there response is along the lines of "oh that's nice". They just don't have the same enthusiasm, or just not interested. For me its nice to have others around who enjoy the hobby as much as I do. Others who have the same enthusiasm as myself. I wish sometimes for a change it would be cool to have someone around when I pull that LC or other nice finds. I make a nice find and I'm stoke on cloud 9, then look around and Im all alone in the middle of the woods or something with no one to share the experience with. Not that I jump up and down and get carried away excited.. Anyway that is why I enjoy posting my finds after a hunt on tnet. Its a place to share your finds with other mders and get some positive feed back. With that said anyone want to meet up for a hunt I'm in Northern Il. :laughing7:

I hunted alone...every hunt for over 5 years.I would get home and show my honey something cool if I was fortunate to find something cool. Then I ran into an old friend and we started hunting together. Now my wife hunts with me too.

I know its a personal thing and there is no universally right answer.I rather enjoy hunting with others even tho I still hunt alone a great deal of the time
