Well we got another chance to get out and do some dirt throwing in a late fall privy. The weather has been a rainy mess lately but we were finally able to get out and hit a pit that I had probed a couple weeks back. We have been anxiously awaiting a nice day to dig.
So we got out around 9:30 in the morning and by 10:30 we were into bottles. I figured this particular pit would be an ash pit with a few finds in it. But it turned out to have just a layer of ash and then the pit was loaded with goodies. Most of them intact. Usually we get a couple keepers and then the rest are blasted with bottle bombs, bricks and rocks. It seemed as though these people just tossed in full bottles, which I'm not complaining about at all.
So we figured the pit would date to 1890 or so but then the first real good find and a first for us was the intact CW Arnold squat blob. Yippee, a great start.
Then we started pulling out intact fruit jars. Strange that these were not blasted. A nice maltese cross jar and a consolidated fruit jar came to light. Then a handful of Dr. Kings and several more beers. A decent find was the Muessel Brothers script slug plate beer. Don and I were puzzled by the difference in time in this pit. It seems as though the dates for the finds ranged pretty far apart from 1885 to 1900. A pretty long time for one pit to be used. Considering there was another privy right behind this one. It yielded a nice amber strap side flask and a couple other finds but most things were shattered.
Maybe two different owners or something. Either way we were able to gather a few more finds before the dreaded snow comes. But who knows maybe the bottle Gods will be nice to us again and let us out one more time.
Till next outing, hope you all are finding treasure out there. Be safe as always. jgas
