Patent dates stayed on for 10 years. That would mean it was manufactured from Feb.1897-1907. Nice find.

Way too long. Takes years of reading...

Hey Doc. About how many patents are in February 1897?

BC, the short answer is 1,747.

Most researchers who work with patents on a regular basis keep files of "trolling ranges." (I must confess, I got this one from a friend.) In this case, the range would be from the week of February 2, #576,082; to the week of February 23, #577,829.

If anybody's got the patience, to go through the entire run, here's where you can do it:

http://patft1.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm

BTW, if year ranges are all you're looking for— to date an item by its patent number, for example— here's a handy chart:

i noticed something doc pointed out, a groove appears in the picture. i looked the item over more closly and noticed it is actually a notch where a screw goes. the screw is still there and on the underside i am able to see that it is a flat head. the head goes through the bottom up through the piece that has the square window and up through the piece with the pat date. also upon closer observing i notied there is evidence of pieces broken off. upper left and right on pat piece there is breakage and lower left and right there is breakage. i think that i will leave this one alone since there is soo much of the puzzle missing, its now almost impossible.there is just too much missing. who knos maybe one day someone will hapen across this forum and say hey, thats a piece off a .....or if i deside to become a hermit i may just browse all of those patents;) in the mean time i would like to thank u all for trying to help me figure it out and putting your time into it, i wish i saw all of these major factors sooner.thanks all
