You are not the first to dig something and not know what it is. I still have boxes of stuff I hope to identify some day. Keep digging and NEVER be afraid to post something you do not know what it is. Everyone has been there.
Yes, thank you. Well you better hear up and dig through your boxes. And post them.

If its approx. 1" in dia. and made of alum. its sure looks like a screw cap from a Briggs lawn mower engine.
(oil fill cap)
Back in the day the caps were made of alum. and the tubes were thin metal . Todays world the caps are plastic material but the tubes are still thin metal.
Almost looks like to me that there was a engine fire and the metal tube melted and the cap since made of alum didn't get hot enough to melt.
I'm only stating what I have seen in my Grandpa's garage where I grew up. Interesting find no matter what it turns out to be.

Looks like someone blew up the lawnmower.

Oil level /fill plugs look like that.
I had to laugh when I read that. 3 days ago mowing i hear a "Bang!"
Im thinking "oh you gotta be kidding me" we got a new mower weeks ago and I thought something was gone on it. I looked at it, still running ok, then where I'd mowed. Was a rat/bird shot 22 shell that must have been there for years and the mower set off "bang". 😆
Thank goodness, its a $500 dollar Aus mower!
