I went out for a few hours yesterday. I looked for places online to hunt and Antietam lake sounded like a good place. When I finally got there, it was covered in garbage, old tires, couches and dead animals. People really have abused this area. I got some good pictures of the area though and about 12 cents in clad.

Man I don't know how you do it, honestly. I can't use it now (I'm married) but please share your secret ;D

Simple, it is confidence and being funny. I am just me and I do not come up with cheesy pick up lines. Another thing I do, which is how I met so many great people in Tokyo, is glow bracelets. I buy them bulk really cheap and take them with me to bars and clubs and just give them out to people. People really love it, and it is a conversation starter.

Nice Pics.

The Lake dates to 1880.
Should be something there.

Still totally pimpin!!!

Which way did you go to get there? Over Skyline Drive or down through Mt Penn? Although it is over grown, the road that comes down from Skyline drive has alot of places that you might want to check. Years ago, Reading used to be a vacation spot for people from Philly.

NICE! Unfortunately, I didn't get out much at all this weekend....too busy doing other things. Might be able to get out tonight for like an hour, maybe. Oh well, there's always next weekend. Happy hunting my friend!

Nice pics and thanks for the memories, spent many of a day there trout and bass fishing. Heck, I am sure I lost a dime or two back in the 60's, can you say silver. :)

Glad to see water going over the waterfall, I sort of remember last drive by there that that the lake was down a bit and I know there was a fight about selling the lake and surrounding land to a developer, which I hope by now has been resolved and it will stay a public area.

Try again in that area, walk the dirt road on the far side, detect that road, many finds can be had by dirt road hunting and I know that road has been there for a long time. Think you have to access it from the head area above where that small pond is or was, think it was almost filled in last time I drove by.. Good Luck, Reading area is OLD and sooner or later you will be getting 1700 era finds. :)

PS There are a series of books that you can view at the Berks Historical Society and most likely also in the Reading Public Library that are perhaps the most valueable source of information for the locations of almost all that was in the Berks County area from the 1700's to early 1980's. I am not sure how many Volumes there are, to buy them now is $$$, but I am sure you can view them at the Historical Society

"THE PASSING SCENE" By George M Meiser , and his wife Gloria Jean Meiser

I have five of the books Volumes 1 tru 5 and they are full of photos, maps of historic Berks County.

The county has purchased the propriety from the city and will, according to them, be preserved. The lake is still fished and is, to my knowledge, stocked with trout every year. There are coins to be found but you will need to sort through the trash to locate any of the older coinage. The area around there goes well back into the 1700's.

How long has the lake been there? It looks man made? Find those fairgrounds though, and I bet you'd have a good day!

hmm I must have been misinformed. Last I heard the dam had broken through and the lake had drained but can't recall where I had heard that. I know there was concern for the stability of the dam.

The lake is man made, it was a reservoir for water for the city of Reading. The fairgrounds are long gone and built over. :(
