I hope there is a furniture expert here, because I am stumped. Anyways, I bought this at the local antique shop for $95, thinking it would look cool in my 250 year old home I just bought, matching the pumpkin pine floors upstairs. I think the chest may be federal but I am not sure. It looks handmade, and uses all square nail. How old is this chest, what style, and was $95 a fair price?

Would it be worth taking it to a professional? Or maybe getting it restored if it is very good?

I think it's a 20th century piece, and appears to have been stained. But, being made by hand, with nice dovetails, it's certainly worth what you paid. That's just my take on it. Have you checked the backs and bottoms of all pieces to check for any makers marks?

I agree with what you said, after reading your post, I looked at it more and compared it to 20th century pieces. I see stuff on it that looks more modern than early to mid 1800's pieces. It is certainly a very good hand done piece though, but good furniture makers still make them today. Based on the square nails, and early wire cut nails mixed together, I would guess that it is probably 1890-1920. It is also definitely stained, enough indicator of it being newer. Probably before WWII though because of the locking mechanism (which still works with a skeleton key I found hanging on the wall of my new house). Thanks!
