The picture is that of an ANGLER fish. The angler fish has an antenae on top of his head with what looks like a small lure. He sits well camouflaged on the bottom and twiches his bait back and forth in front of his/her mouth. When a small fish moves in to investigate it lurches forward and up and snatches the fish in his mouth. That's a pretty n eat piece you have there.
GG

The upper curve is the antenna used by many fish species to attract smaller fish...the mouth area shows this fish has just caught his/her dinner. Here's my favorite piece of plate..a cockroach on a dinner plate?????cockroachplate.webpcockroachplate.webp

I believe it is an angler fish as well, which I find strange because I always thought the angler fish was deeeeeep sea only. Awesome find! Thanks for sharing.

Wow. The more I think about it, the more amazing it is.

That is a deep sea fish. You must be near the ocean??? I've never seen an image like that on north American pottery.

Gosh I really like it !!!!

I'm guna talk you out of that someday

Lol! Maybe there was ocean front property there in New Mexico?

''Possibly hunting fish with bent arrow'' ? :laughing7:

Is that arrow made for shooting around corners???

....just peeking in...wow...answers already...thanks guys! First...Navigator...yes thought of "angler" when we first looked at it...but...we're not near the sea, we have creeks and a couple of med. rivers in the area....and the altitude is near 5,000...so ? Are there any "inland" fish like that? Flasks...not having dinner at your place...lol....that is an interesting bug plate sherd, where did you get it? Red Earth...really...did I post it upside down? lol While you may talk me out of something...sorry it won't be this one...;) South Texas...thanks! And dear old digger...lol...when we get the "big one" maybe...right? Actually think you might be right about the "carrying" fish thing....!? No matter what it is....thanks all! :)

Kat,

For an amature Hunter, you sure have some of the very best personal finds that I have ever seen.

You mentioned that your husband hunts as well. Do you guys share a collection? Do you post his findings as well?

I don't mean to be too nosey but like I said, your artifacts are very interesting. All of us find flint and hardstone relics, but the things like your bear stone, the stone faces, the fish pottery, among other stuff isn't a common occurrence.

If there are other great artifacts like this, by all means, please share

Idk but you have some of the most unique artifacts very nice NOTWORTY !!!!!

very cool and interesting piece.

Looks like angler fish. How the hell did that guy dive so deep and sketch a fish. I have heard of oyster divers holding their breath a long time but this takes the cake. Defiantly display material

kat that is a design called a mimbres fish design look it up on google and you will see lots of different types. That looks to be the bottom of a bowl a super nice find:notworthy:
