Hello,
I Found this near the foundation of an 1800s homestead in SE Michigan. There were many targets (including rusted square nails) in the same hole but I believe the target ID was on the high side; maybe brass or tin. The slot has a thin hinged metal "door" under it. You can insert something but if you tried to shake it out the slot would close. Maybe the lid of a bank? If so, perhaps I'll find coins in the area. Wishful thinking?

I think you identified your own find. Certainly makes sense. And it appears to be from Victorian era from design. I may be wrong but that is my opinion.
Maybe that's it. Someone suggested an oil lamp wick slot but I haven't been able to find an oil lamp with a rectangular or square lid.

All guesses are good, but I am going to stick with yours. Makes perfect sense to me. Till I hear a better idea.
