This stone found in an old campsite is approx 10 inches long 2-3 tall 3-4 wide my guess was a fire starter any help would be appreciated

Nice find amishboy. I can picture (in my minds eye) the stick spinning and smoke starting to flow...
 
Those are commonly called Nutting Stones and the premise is they were used to crack nuts in the holes. There are several other theories as well including the one you suggested.
 
Because of size and the way the cupulet looks I would guess fire starter. But as Reaper pointed out a lot of these are speculation now unless specifically found in a fall mast shelter. It is a very neat stone age artifact Amishboy .
