I have seen and heard about these Richmond Virginia police buttons and from what I know they are post civil war buttons since Richmond did not have CW police buttons like this during the war, I believe this Richmond buttons were made shortly after the civil war in the late 19th and 20th century.

I have this on Griffith:
John A. Griffith & Co.; Baltimore. Griffith was listed in 1849-50 as a tailor at 6 Light St. in the firm of Merritt and Griffith. In 1858-59 he was listed as a merchant tailor at 187 W. Baltimore St. & in 1867-69 as tailors trimmings. The firm lasted until at least 1915.

The only thing I know about the Superior Quality mark is it is on the Steele and Johnson back die list and was inherited by the Waterbury company when they purchased Steele and Johnson around 1920.

the shape of the eagle might date it to the later parts of the 1800's. I would guess 1880's to 90's. It has those horizontal lines on it like some of the other buttons on the forum which would put it in that time period also. Hope this helped! HH
