So I found this in a lake bed, it holds a co2 bottle and the big hole in the top is threaded. The housing is Alum

im thinking drug paraphernalia...
to me it looks like a nitrous cracker... kids get a cylinder of compressed nitrous, put it in the cylinder twist it to "crack" it open while holding a large balloon over the top to collect the expanded nitrous then inhale deeply on the gas.

nitrous is also sold in the same cylinders as co2

google "nitrous cracker" and see what kind of pictures you come up with
